CHAPTER 2 — "The Dead Woman's Signature: The Secret That Turned a $3 Million Inheritance Into a Criminal Investigation"

Valeria couldn't blink.

Her fingers trembled so violently that the document almost slipped from her hands.

The signature at the bottom of the page was impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

Written in elegant blue ink were the words...

Isabel Reyes.

Her mother.

The same woman whose funeral had taken place only nine days earlier.

The same woman whose death certificate had been signed by doctors.

The same woman Valeria herself had buried.

Her heart pounded against her ribs.

"No..."

she whispered.

"This has to be fake."

Don Roberto slowly removed his glasses and rubbed his tired eyes.

"I hoped I would never have to show you this."

Valeria looked at him.

"What exactly am I looking at?"

The elderly attorney slid another folder across the polished oak desk.

"It's a power-of-attorney document."

"It gives someone the legal authority to control assets connected to your mother's estate."

Valeria frowned.

"But my mother never mentioned this."

"Because she never signed it."

The words hit like a hammer.

"What?"

Don Roberto pointed toward the bottom corner of the document.

"Look carefully."

At first, everything appeared normal.

Official government seals.

Witness signatures.

Registration numbers.

A licensed notary's certification.

Everything looked authentic.

Then Don Roberto placed another sheet beside it.

It was Isabel Reyes' original signature from a property purchase completed fifteen years earlier.

At a glance...

The two signatures looked identical.

Almost too identical.

Don Roberto leaned closer.

"That's exactly what worried me."

He handed Valeria a magnifying glass.

She examined every curve.

Every stroke.

Every tiny detail.

Then she noticed something strange.

Every single letter matched perfectly.

Not naturally...

Perfectly.

The spacing.

The pressure.

Even the smallest ink movements.

It wasn't handwriting.

It was a copy.

A mechanical reproduction.

Someone had traced or digitally duplicated her mother's signature.

Valeria felt sick.

"So..."

"My mother's signature was forged?"

Don Roberto nodded slowly.

"And whoever created this document spent a great deal of money making it look legitimate."

Silence filled the office.

Outside, traffic horns echoed through downtown Mexico City.

Inside...

Everything suddenly felt unreal.

Valeria struggled to breathe.

"If this document is fake..."

"Who benefits?"

Don Roberto didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another folder.

This one contained bank statements.

Company ownership records.

Loan agreements.

Mortgage contracts.

One by one...

He placed them across the desk.

The picture became horrifyingly clear.

Six months earlier...

Several companies connected to the Villalobos family had quietly begun collapsing.

One construction project had failed.

Another luxury condominium development had been suspended.

Banks refused additional financing.

Private investors demanded repayment.

Within weeks...

The family had accumulated debts exceeding eighty million pesos.

Nearly four million American dollars.

Valeria stared at the numbers.

"This can't be real."

"It is."

Don Roberto pointed toward one company name highlighted in yellow.

Villalobos Capital Holdings.

Officially...

Mateo owned only twenty percent.

The remaining shares belonged to his mother...

And his younger brother, Adrián.

But buried deep inside another contract...

Valeria discovered something shocking.

Her own name.

She blinked.

"What is this?"

Don Roberto sighed.

"That's the question."

According to corporate records...

Valeria Reyes had personally guaranteed one of the family's largest business loans.

Amount guaranteed:

Forty-five million pesos.

She almost laughed.

"I've never even seen this contract."

"I know."

"I've never signed anything like this."

"I know."

"Then how is my name there?"

Don Roberto looked directly into her eyes.

"Because someone signed it for you."

The room spun.

Valeria grabbed the edge of the desk to steady herself.

Someone had forged her signature.

Not once.

But multiple times.

Every forged document connected back to one objective.

Her inheritance.

Don Roberto quietly continued.

"Had your mother died without informing me..."

"The banks would have considered you legally responsible."

Valeria's face lost all color.

"They wanted me to pay their debts."

"Exactly."

"And once you inherited your mother's estate..."

"They intended to collect."

Her breathing became shallow.

The Sunday lunch...

The sudden demand...

Mateo's explosion...

None of it had been spontaneous.

It had all been planned.

They already believed the forged documents guaranteed access to her inheritance.

The lunch had only been psychological pressure.

One last attempt before using the legal system.

Valeria slowly remembered dozens of strange moments during the previous two years.

Mateo insisting she sign "routine paperwork."

Documents already folded.

Pages clipped together.

"Just sign here."

"Don't worry about reading."

"It's only for accounting."

She had trusted him.

Sometimes she signed.

Sometimes she refused because she was too busy.

How many pages had she never actually read?

The thought made her stomach twist.

Don Roberto interrupted her thoughts.

"There's something else."

He reached into the bottom drawer of his desk.

This time...

He removed an old envelope sealed with dark blue wax.

Across the front...

Written in Isabel Reyes' handwriting...

Were five words.

Only if you discover betrayal.

Valeria froze.

"My mother left this?"

"She instructed me personally."

"If your marriage remained honest..."

"I was never supposed to open it."

His hands hesitated.

"For nine months..."

"I prayed I'd never have to."

Slowly...

He broke the wax seal.

Inside were three items.

A handwritten letter.

A small silver key.

And a USB flash drive.

Valeria looked confused.

"My mother didn't even know how to use a USB drive."

Don Roberto smiled sadly.

"She learned."

"Because she became afraid."

Afraid.

The word echoed through the room.

Afraid of what?

He plugged the drive into his office computer.

A single video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

He clicked play.

Static filled the screen.

Then...

The image cleared.

Valeria immediately recognized the place.

Her mother's private office above the flagship bakery.

The recording showed Isabel sitting behind her wooden desk.

She looked thinner.

Weaker.

But her eyes remained sharp.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"It means I was right."

Valeria covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

Her mother's voice filled the office once again.

"My daughter..."

"I know you'll want to believe your husband."

"I wanted to believe him too."

"But if Don Roberto has shown you this recording..."

"It means Mateo and his family finally made their move."

Valeria whispered,

"Mom..."

The older woman continued speaking.

"Three months ago..."

"I accidentally discovered something they never intended me to see."

She reached into a drawer on the video and held up several papers.

"They're drowning in debt."

"They're desperate."

"And desperation makes dangerous people."

Valeria's heartbeat accelerated.

Then her mother said something that changed everything.

"I hired investigators."

"They've been following the Villalobos family."

"They uncovered meetings..."

"Secret bank accounts..."

"And someone inside the government helping them."

Don Roberto paused the video.

His face had become pale.

Valeria stared at him.

"What?"

He slowly reached for the mouse.

"There was never supposed to be another copy of this recording."

"What do you mean?"

"The original disappeared from my office."

The room fell silent.

Someone...

Had already broken into the law office.

Someone knew about the investigation.

Someone knew this video existed.

Before either of them could speak...

A loud crash echoed from downstairs.

Then another.

Glass shattered.

Voices shouted.

Footsteps thundered through the building.

Don Roberto walked toward the office window.

His expression changed instantly.

He whispered only four words.

"They found us already."

Valeria rushed beside him.

Outside...

Three black luxury SUVs had just stopped in front of the building.

Men in expensive suits were getting out.

None of them carried briefcases.

Every one of them wore an earpiece.

And leading them...

Stepping calmly onto the sidewalk with a confident smile...

Was Mateo Villalobos.

He slowly looked up toward the office window.

Locked eyes with Valeria.

Then raised his phone to his ear.

Seconds later...

Don Roberto's office telephone began to ring.

No one moved.

The ringing continued.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Finally...

Valeria picked up the receiver.

Before she could say a single word...

Mateo's calm voice came through the line.

"You should never have gone to the lawyer."

A chilling silence followed.

Then he added...

"Now hand me the envelope..."

"...before someone else gets hurt."
