CHAPTER 3 — "The Escape That Changed Everything: One Hidden Safe, One Betrayal, and a Secret That Could Send an Entire Dynasty to Prison"

The phone slipped from Valeria's trembling hand.

It struck the hardwood floor with a sharp crack.

For a moment...

Neither she nor Don Roberto spoke.

Only the distant sound of footsteps echoed from the lobby below.

Heavy.

Purposeful.

Closing in.

Don Roberto immediately bent down, picked up the receiver, and quietly placed it back in its cradle before anyone could trace whether the call had been answered.

His calm expression had vanished.

For the first time in the thirty-five years Valeria had known him...

She saw genuine fear in his eyes.

"We have less than two minutes."

He crossed the office in three hurried steps and locked the door.

Then another.

Then a third reinforced steel lock hidden inside the frame.

Valeria stared at him.

"You've never done that before."

"I've never needed to."

Outside the office...

Someone pounded on the building's front entrance.

Once.

Twice.

A third time.

The receptionist downstairs cried out in panic.

Then...

Silence.

The kind of silence that was somehow more terrifying than shouting.

Don Roberto walked directly toward the large bookshelf behind his desk.

Without saying a word, he removed three thick legal volumes from the top shelf.

He reached deep inside the empty space.

A metallic click echoed through the room.

To Valeria's astonishment...

The entire bookshelf slowly swung outward.

Behind it was a narrow concrete passageway.

Hidden.

Windowless.

Barely wide enough for one person at a time.

"I've represented powerful families for decades," Don Roberto said quietly.

"Some clients appreciated honesty."

"Others punished it."

"I built this escape route after receiving death threats nearly twenty years ago."

Valeria looked into the dark tunnel.

"You mean..."

"You've used this before?"

He hesitated.

"Only once."

His answer sent a chill through her body.

He hurried back to the desk and gathered only three things.

The sealed envelope from Isabel.

The silver key.

The USB drive.

Everything else remained behind.

"The documents?"

Valeria asked.

"They'll search for paper."

He slipped the tiny USB into the inside lining of his jacket.

"They won't expect this."

Another violent crash echoed downstairs.

Wood splintered.

Voices shouted.

"Second floor!"

"Search every office!"

"They're still here!"

Valeria froze.

"They're coming."

Don Roberto nodded.

"Move."

The hidden passage smelled of dust and damp concrete.

Only a single emergency light illuminated the narrow corridor.

Their footsteps echoed softly as they hurried deeper underground.

Behind them...

The bookshelf quietly closed.

Concealing every trace of the secret exit.

For nearly three minutes they walked in silence.

Finally...

The tunnel ended beneath an abandoned warehouse behind the neighboring block.

Don Roberto unlocked a rusted steel hatch.

Fresh air rushed inside.

They emerged into an alley hidden from the street.

Valeria looked around.

"No one followed us."

"Not yet."

Across the street sat an old blue delivery van.

Its faded paint was peeling.

One headlight was cracked.

It looked completely ordinary.

Don Roberto smiled slightly.

"My clients always underestimated old vehicles."

Moments later they were driving through downtown traffic.

Neither spoke.

Each passing police car made Valeria's heart race.

Her thoughts refused to slow down.

Forged signatures.

Fake guarantees.

Hidden investigations.

Men chasing them through a law office.

Nothing about her marriage had been real.

After nearly twenty minutes...

Don Roberto suddenly turned off the main avenue.

"This isn't the way to your house."

"We're not going home."

He glanced at her.

"If Mateo expected you to visit me..."

"He'll certainly expect you to return home."

Valeria realized he was right.

Her apartment was no longer safe.

Neither was the bakery.

Nor any property connected to her inheritance.

For the first time...

She truly understood the danger she was in.

"This isn't about money anymore."

Don Roberto nodded grimly.

"It never was."

They eventually stopped outside a small colonial church tucked between old apartment buildings.

The neighborhood looked peaceful.

Children played soccer nearby.

An elderly woman watered flowers.

Nothing suggested that a life-or-death conspiracy had just unfolded less than thirty minutes away.

Don Roberto led her inside.

Instead of entering the sanctuary...

He walked toward the rear storage room.

There...

Behind stacks of donated furniture...

Stood an old iron safe built into the wall.

He removed the silver key Isabel had left.

It fit perfectly.

The heavy door swung open.

Inside rested a single leather folder.

Nothing else.

Valeria looked confused.

"My mother kept all this here?"

Don Roberto answered softly.

"She said if anything ever happened..."

"This folder would explain everything."

He placed it carefully on an old wooden table.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Each one numbered.

Each one dated.

Private investigator reports.

Surveillance images.

Financial records.

Telephone logs.

Secret meeting schedules.

The evidence stretched back almost four years.

Valeria turned one page.

Her breath caught.

There was Mateo.

Leaving an expensive hotel late at night.

Beside him...

A woman she had never seen before.

Tall.

Elegant.

About forty years old.

They weren't merely talking.

They were holding hands.

Another photograph.

The same woman entered a private bank with Mateo.

Another.

Dinner together.

Another.

Boarding a private plane.

Valeria felt her stomach tighten.

"He's having an affair..."

Don Roberto shook his head.

"I don't think that's the biggest surprise."

He handed her the investigator's report attached to the photos.

Occupation:

Senior Vice President — Banco Nacional Fiduciario.

Valeria frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means she oversees inheritance trust accounts."

Silence.

Then realization struck.

The woman wasn't simply Mateo's lover.

She controlled access to multimillion-peso estates.

Including...

Potentially...

Her mother's.

Valeria slowly lowered the report.

"My inheritance..."

Don Roberto finished the sentence.

"May have been their target long before your mother became ill."

The room suddenly felt much colder.

Everything changed.

This wasn't a desperate family reacting to bankruptcy.

This was a carefully planned operation years in the making.

Her marriage.

Their kindness.

The smiles.

The anniversaries.

The vacations.

Had any of it been real?

Valeria's eyes filled with tears.

"I was chosen."

Don Roberto remained silent.

She whispered again.

"I wasn't loved."

"I was selected."

The truth hit harder than anything else.

She hadn't accidentally married into a wealthy family.

She had been deliberately pursued because she was the only heir to one of the largest privately owned bakery empires in Mexico City.

Before Don Roberto could respond...

The old church bells suddenly rang.

Not once.

Not twice.

Five rapid chimes.

An unusual pattern.

The elderly priest rushed into the storage room, breathing heavily.

"Roberto..."

"They're here."

Don Roberto frowned.

"Already?"

The priest nodded.

"There are black SUVs parked outside."

"They're asking questions."

"They showed photographs."

Valeria's pulse quickened.

"How could they possibly know we came here?"

No one answered.

Instead...

All three slowly turned toward the leather folder still lying open on the table.

Don Roberto's face turned pale.

He flipped rapidly through the investigator's reports.

His hands suddenly stopped.

One entire section was missing.

Someone had already removed several pages.

Not recently.

Years ago.

He whispered almost to himself...

"Oh no..."

Valeria looked at him.

"What?"

His voice barely escaped.

"The investigators suspected someone close to your mother was leaking information."

He swallowed hard.

"They never discovered who."

Before anyone could say another word...

The church's front doors burst open.

Several footsteps echoed through the sanctuary.

A deep male voice called out confidently.

"Father Miguel..."

"We have a court order."

"We're looking for two fugitives."

Valeria's blood ran cold.

Fugitives?

They had turned the victims into criminals.

Then another voice echoed through the church.

One she recognized instantly.

Smooth.

Confident.

Terrifyingly calm.

Mateo.

"I know she's here."

"Tell her she only has one chance."

Valeria backed away from the doorway.

Don Roberto quietly reached into the safe.

From beneath the remaining documents...

He removed something neither Valeria nor Father Miguel expected.

A small black handgun.

He checked the magazine.

Loaded.

Then looked directly at Valeria.

His voice was calm.

Steady.

And more frightening than ever.

"Your mother made me promise I'd never use this..."

He slowly chambered a round.

"...unless they came for you."
