CHAPTER 5 — "She Read the Arrest Warrant... Then Discovered Her Husband Had Been Planning Her Ruin Since the Day They Met"

Valeria couldn't take her eyes off the document.
Even from inside the convent...
She recognized the official seal of the Attorney General's Office.
Her own name appeared in bold black letters.
VALERIA ISABEL REYES.
Below it...
One accusation after another.
Corporate fraud.
Forgery.
Money laundering.
Conspiracy to hide assets.
She felt as if the ground had vanished beneath her feet.
"They're blaming me..."
she whispered.
Don Roberto's jaw tightened.
"They're trying to make you the perfect scapegoat."
Outside, the elegant woman folded the warrant with deliberate calm.
She looked toward the convent doors and smiled as though she had already won.
Then she stepped back into the shade of the black SUV.
She wasn't in a hurry.
People who knew the ending never rushed.
Inside, Father Miguel closed every curtain.
"We don't have much time."
Esteban Cruz carefully opened his worn leather notebook again.
"You need to understand who you're really fighting."
Valeria forced herself to breathe.
"Start from the beginning."
The old investigator nodded.
"About ten years ago, your mother's businesses began attracting attention."
"Not because they were failing..."
"Because they were almost impossible to acquire."
Doña Isabel Reyes had refused every offer.
Large investment firms wanted her commercial buildings.
Developers wanted the bakery locations.
Foreign corporations wanted the brand.
She rejected them all.
"She always said one thing," Esteban recalled.
"'A family legacy is not for sale.'"
But someone refused to accept that answer.
At first, the pressure was subtle.
Anonymous purchase offers.
Unexpected tax audits.
False labor complaints.
Then came something far more dangerous.
People started getting close to the family.
A friendly accountant.
A financial consultant.
A real estate adviser.
None of them stayed long.
Each disappeared after gathering information.
Valeria frowned.
"You think they were spies?"
"I know they were."
Esteban slid several faded photographs across the table.
Each showed different people speaking with Isabel over the years.
At first glance, they looked unrelated.
Different ages.
Different professions.
Different occasions.
Then Esteban pointed to a tiny detail.
The same silver lapel pin.
A small falcon with its wings spread.
Every one of them wore it.
"The Falcon Circle," he said quietly.
Valeria had never heard the name.
Don Roberto, however, looked alarmed.
"I thought they disappeared years ago."
"So did everyone else."
Esteban lowered his voice.
"They don't steal companies."
"They infiltrate families."
Silence settled over the room.
"They identify wealthy heirs."
"They arrange relationships."
"They create financial dependency."
"And when the time is right..."
"They legally strip victims of everything they own."
Valeria slowly shook her head.
"No..."
"My marriage can't have been..."
Esteban met her eyes.
"We believe Mateo was recruited before he met you."
The words cut deeper than any knife.
Every anniversary.
Every birthday.
Every promise.
Every kiss.
Had all of it been part of someone's plan?
Tears filled her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
"I want proof."
Esteban reached into his notebook and removed a faded receipt from a small coffee shop.
The date printed at the top stopped Valeria cold.
It was dated three months before she had supposedly "accidentally" met Mateo.
She remembered that afternoon perfectly.
She had spilled coffee on his suit in a crowded bookstore café.
He had smiled.
They laughed.
He insisted it was fate.
She had believed it.
Esteban pointed to the receipt.
On the back, someone had handwritten instructions.
Target: Valeria Reyes.
Location confirmed.
Contact begins Monday.
Valeria stared at the words.
Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.
"No..."
"This isn't possible."
Don Roberto carefully examined the ink.
"It's authentic."
"The receipt came from the café where you first met."
Valeria remembered every detail of that day.
The table by the window.
The rain outside.
The novel she had been reading.
The coffee that slipped from her hands.
The handsome stranger who told her not to worry.
She had called it destiny.
It had actually been surveillance.
Before anyone spoke again, Father Miguel entered carrying an old metal box.
"I found something else your mother left."
Inside the box were dozens of handwritten letters.
Each addressed to Valeria.
None had ever been mailed.
The first letter was dated eight years earlier.
Only one paragraph had been underlined.
"If you are reading this, it means I waited too long to tell you what I feared. I wanted to believe your husband loved you. But every instinct I have tells me someone entered our lives for a reason that has nothing to do with love."
Valeria closed her eyes.
Her mother had suspected the truth...
Years ago.
Yet she had stayed silent because she lacked proof.
Another letter contained a list of names.
Lawyers.
Bank officials.
Notaries.
Government employees.
Some had check marks beside them.
Others had question marks.
At the bottom of the page, Isabel had written:
"Find the honest ones before they find you."
Don Roberto suddenly looked up from the papers.
"Wait..."
He quickly flipped through every letter.
His expression changed.
"One is missing."
"What do you mean?" Valeria asked.
"There should be twelve."
"There are only eleven."
Esteban immediately understood.
"The final letter."
Don Roberto nodded.
"Your mother told me she wrote one letter that explained everything."
"The names."
"The mastermind."
"The reason they targeted your family."
Valeria looked around the room.
"It's gone?"
"I'm afraid someone took it."
Silence followed.
Then Esteban slowly reached into his jacket.
"I thought this might happen."
He pulled out an old cassette tape.
Not a USB drive.
Not a memory card.
An actual cassette.
"I never told Isabel I kept a backup."
Valeria looked confused.
"A backup of what?"
"The conversation."
"What conversation?"
"The night she confronted someone."
Don Roberto's eyes widened.
"You recorded it?"
"I was waiting outside."
He held up the cassette.
"She didn't know I was recording."
"But I heard everything."
Valeria's heartbeat quickened.
"Who was she talking to?"
Esteban swallowed.
"The person she believed was behind the entire conspiracy."
Father Miguel searched through an old cabinet until he found a dusty cassette player.
The machine crackled to life.
The tape began spinning.
Static filled the room.
Then Isabel's unmistakable voice emerged.
Calm.
Firm.
Fearless.
"You've manipulated my daughter long enough."
A man's voice answered.
Smooth.
Educated.
Cold.
"You still don't understand, Isabel."
"This was never about your daughter."
Valeria leaned forward.
The stranger continued.
"She was only the key."
A long pause.
Then her mother's voice trembled for the first time.
"So..."
"You were after..."
The recording suddenly distorted.
A loud burst of static drowned out several words.
Then the stranger laughed.
When the audio returned...
Only one sentence remained perfectly clear.
"The Reyes fortune is only a fraction of what truly belongs to her."
The tape abruptly ended.
Silence consumed the room.
Valeria looked at Don Roberto.
"What did he mean?"
"My inheritance is only a fraction..."
"Of what?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Before anyone could replay the cassette...
A loud explosion shook the convent.
Windows shattered.
Dust filled the air.
The lights flickered.
Someone outside shouted through a megaphone.
"This building is surrounded!"
Then another voice echoed across the courtyard.
Cold.
Confident.
And unmistakably Mateo's.
"Valeria!"
"You have sixty seconds!"
"Walk out alone..."
May you like
"...or we'll burn the entire building to the ground."
End of Chapter 5.
