Chapter 3: Hostage of the Hearth

The Romano estate was exactly as I remembered it—a towering fortress of stone and iron nestled deep in the hills, isolated from the rest of the world. But this time, I wasn't entering as his beloved bride. I was entering as a captive who had stolen his only son.
Alessio had assigned us the grand suite on the third floor. Leo, exhausted from the night's trauma, was fast asleep in the massive king-sized bed, surrounded by a mountain of brand-new toys Alessio’s men had scrambled to buy in the middle of the night.
I stood by the window, watching the rain beat against the glass, when the heavy oak door creaked open.
Alessio walked in. He had changed into a dark silk shirt, the top buttons undone, looking every bit the king of the city's underworld. He carried a folder in his hand.
He tossed it onto the coffee table.
"The DNA results," Alessio said, his voice flat. "Fast-tracked by my personal physician. Ninety-nine point nine percent match. He is my son, Mera."
"I know," I said quietly, not looking at him.
"You knew," he repeated, his voice rising, thick with a dangerous mix of pain and fury. "You knew I spent years believing I was broken. You knew I blamed myself for our inability to conceive. And when the miracle finally happened, you took my child and ran into the dark!"
He grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to look at him. "Why? Why would you do that to me? Did you hate me that much?"
"I did it to save his life!" I screamed back, the tears I had held back for hours finally spilling over. "Do you really think I wanted to live in poverty? Do you think I wanted to wash dishes and scrub floors for pennies while my son slept in a drafty apartment?"
Alessio froze, his grip loosening slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"Six years ago, before I ran, I found your medical files," I sobbed, clutching his lapels. "The ones from your personal doctor, Dr. Vance. But I also found something else. I found a second report hidden in his desk. You weren't sterile, Alessio. You were being poisoned."
Alessio’s eyes widened, a rare look of genuine shock crossing his face.
"Someone in your inner circle was paying Dr. Vance to administer low doses of a toxin disguised as your daily vitamin regimen," I explained, my voice shaking. "It was designed to make you sterile, to ensure the Romano line ended with you. And when I found out I was pregnant, I heard Dr. Vance talking to someone on the phone. They knew I was pregnant. They were planning to kill me and the baby before anyone found out you could have an heir."
I looked up into his eyes, searching for the man I had fallen in love with. "I couldn't tell you, Alessio. I didn't know who to trust. Your cousin? Your underboss? Everyone was smiling in your face while planning our deaths. If I had stayed, Leo would have died in my womb. I had to make you believe I was dead. I had to protect our son."
Alessio stepped back, the revelation hitting him like a physical blow. The anger in his eyes slowly dissolved, replaced by a profound, agonizing guilt.
"You did all of this... to protect him," he whispered.
"And to protect you," I said softly. "But my escape was supposed to be permanent. You were never supposed to find us."
"I would have found you eventually," Alessio said, his voice rough. "But now... now they know."
He walked to the window, his expression hardening. "The attack at the diner wasn't a random hit. My cousin, Matteo, has been making moves on my territory. If he knows about Leo..."

Suddenly, the fire alarm in the mansion began to wail.
The lights flickered and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
