Chapter 4: The Traitor's Trap

"Stay close to me!" Alessio ordered, his hand instantly finding mine in the dark.

I rushed to the bed, scooping Leo into my arms. He woke up with a whimper, clinging tightly to my neck. "Mama? What's happening?"

"It's okay, baby. Just close your eyes," I whispered, trying to keep my voice calm even as my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

The heavy scent of smoke began to seep under the door. Down the hall, the sound of gunfire echoed through the mansion. The security grid had been breached from the inside.

Alessio led us through a hidden panel in the closet, a narrow stone passageway built for escape. We descended in the pitch black, the sounds of battle fading above us.

"We go to the garage," Alessio whispered. "My armored sedan is there. I will get you and the boy out of the city."

"What about you?" I asked, a sudden wave of panic washing over me. Despite everything, the thought of losing him made my chest ache.

"I have to end this," Alessio said, his eyes gleaming in the faint light of his phone screen. "Matteo has played his final card. I will not let him threaten my family any longer."

We reached the underground garage. It was empty and quiet, too quiet.

Alessio opened the door to the armored sedan, ushering me and Leo inside. "Lock the doors. Do not open them for anyone but me."

"Alessio, wait—" I started, but before I could finish, a bright searchlight blinded us from the entrance of the garage.

"Well, well. Look at the happy family," a mocking voice echoed through the concrete space.

Out of the shadows stepped Matteo, Alessio’s cousin, holding a heavy assault rifle. Behind him were six heavily armed mercenaries.

"Matteo," Alessio growled, stepping in front of the car, shielding us with his body. "You dare bring war into my home?"

"Your home?" Matteo laughed, his face twisted in envy. "You've been soft ever since Mera 'died' six years ago, Alessio. And now, I find out you have a secret brat? A little bastard to inherit the empire I've spent my life building? I don't think so."

Matteo pointed his weapon directly at the car window where Leo was sitting. "The boy dies tonight. And so do you, cousin."

"You want my throne, Matteo?" Alessio said, his voice calm, dead, and utterly terrifying. He slowly raised his hands. "Take it. But let them go. The boy has nothing to do with this."

"Oh, he has everything to do with this," Matteo sneered. "He is your blood. And I am wiping out your bloodline once and for all."

Matteo raised his rifle to aim at Alessio’s chest.

But he didn't see me reaching into the glove compartment of the armored sedan. My hand brushed against the cold steel of Alessio's spare weapon—a small, silver revolver he always kept hidden there.

I had spent six years running. I had spent six years being afraid.

But I was not going to let them touch my son.

I rolled down the bulletproof window just an inch, leveled the gun, and pulled the trigger.
