Chapter 5: The Romano Legacy

The gunshot echoed like thunder in the enclosed garage.

The bullet caught Matteo directly in the shoulder, spinning him around and causing his rifle to discharge harmlessly into the concrete ceiling.

"Now!" Alessio roared.

In a flash of lethal movement, Alessio drew his weapon and fired at the surrounding mercenaries. His shots were precise, devastating, and incredibly fast. Three men dropped before they could even aim their weapons.

I scrambled out of the car, keeping Leo shielded behind the heavy door, firing the silver revolver at anyone who dared look our way. I wasn't a trained killer, but a mother's instinct is a terrifying force.

Matteo was on his knees, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes wide with shock as he looked at me. "You... you crazy bitch..."

Alessio walked over to him slowly, his gun pointed directly at Matteo’s forehead. The remaining mercenaries had fled or lay dead on the floor.

"You poisoned my food," Alessio said, his voice cold as ice. "You lied to me for years. And you tried to kill my son."

"Alessio, please—we're family!" Matteo begged, his bravado completely gone.

"My family is in that car," Alessio replied.

He didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.

The silence that returned to the garage was heavy, but the air felt clear for the first time in six years. The poison had been removed from the Romano family, once and for all.

Alessio turned around, his hands covered in soot and blood. He looked at me, then at Leo, who was peeking out from behind the car door.

Leo wasn't crying. Instead, his little face was filled with a strange, quiet intensity. He looked at the gun in his father's hand, then up at his father's face.

"You're very fast," Leo whispered.

Alessio’s eyes softened, a genuine, tearful smile finally breaking across his rugged face. He walked over, kneeling down, and wrapped his arms around both of us, pulling us close to his chest.

"I will spend the rest of my life making up for the years I lost," Alessio whispered into my hair. "No more running, Mera. No more hiding. You are my wife. He is my son. And this city belongs to us."

Six years ago, I ran to save my son's life.

But as I felt Alessio’s strong arms wrap around us, shielding us from the cold world, I realized we didn't have to run anymore.

The Mafia King had finally found his queen, and the little boy with his father's eyes had finally found his home.
