Chapter 1 - The First Blue LightsThe flashing red and blue strobes painted Marcus’s living room walls in a frantic, pulsating rhythm.

Outside, the neighborhood was still fast asleep, oblivious to the violence that had just shattered a marriage and triggered a reckoning. But inside, the air crackled with raw, volatile energy.

Marcus wasn't smiling anymore.

As two local patrol officers surged through the front door, their hands instinctively hovering over their utility belts, Marcus immediately tried to pivot into his favorite role: the aggrieved, misunderstood husband dealing with a hysterical family member.

“Officer, thank God!” Marcus blurted out, raising his hands in a theatrical display of innocence while taking a strategic step forward. “My sister-in-law broke into my house! She assaulted me in my own hallway! Look at my arm, she—she’s unhinged, she thinks because she wears a uniform she’s above the law—”

“Shut your mouth,” I said.

My voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It carried the cold, razor-sharp authority honed from a decade of interrogating hardened military criminals who thought they could outsmart the system.

The lead officer, a weathered veteran named Sergeant Miller, took one look at my open jacket, saw the Army CID badge gleaming in the dim hallway light, and instantly shifted his posture. He looked past Marcus, catching sight of the shattered lamp, the dark stain on the drywall, and the unmistakable silhouette of me standing guard at the top of the stairs.

“Colonel Bennett?” Sergeant Miller asked, his eyes narrowing as he stepped further into the foyer. “Dispatch said Army CID. What’s the situation?”

“Domestic violence in progress, Sergeant,” I replied, descending the stairs with slow, measured steps. “Victim is my twin sister, Nora Bennett-Hayes. She has severe blunt-force trauma, strangulation marks, and a closed head injury. The perpetrator is standing right here.”

Marcus scoffed, a desperate nervous laugh escaping his throat. “She’s lying! She’s covering for Nora's psychotic episode! You can't touch me, I am a private citizen, this is a civil domestic dispute—!”

“Shut up, sir. Step back against the wall, hands where I can see them,” Sergeant Miller barked, instantly dropping any pretense of leniency as his partner moved in to secure Marcus in heavy steel cuffs.

“You can’t do this!” Marcus shrieked as the cold metal snapped around his wrists. The smug arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by a frantic, sweating panic. “Do you know who I am? Do you know who my boss is? I’ll ruin your career! I’ll have your badge by morning, you hear me? Elena, tell them! Tell them you're just making this up!”

I didn't even look at him as he was shoved roughly against the drywall.

Upstairs, the paramedics finally rushed past with a trauma kit, their boots thudding heavily against the wood. I turned my back on Marcus, climbing back up to where Nora lay, because right now, nothing else in the universe mattered except keeping my sister breathing.
