Chapter 7 - The Unraveling in Cell Block BDeep beneath the federal courthouse, far away from the polished mahogany boardrooms and sterile hospital halls, Cell Block B was cold, damp, and smelled of rust and despair.

Marcus Hayes sat on the edge of a thin, bolted steel cot, staring blankly at the chipped cinder-block wall across from him.

The designer shirt was gone, replaced scratchy, bright orange jumpsuit bearing the bold black lettering of a federal detainee. The custom-tailored confidence that had defined his entire adult life had been stripped away along with his belt, his watch, and his wedding ring.

Footsteps echoed sharply down the concrete corridor.

Heavy boots. Rhythmic. Unforgiving.

Marcus didn't even look up. He knew who it was.

The heavy steel door of his holding cell clanked open, and Special Agent Vance stepped inside, holding a thick, freshly printed federal indictment package. Vance didn't sit down; he simply tossed the heavy packet onto the small metal table in the center of the cell.

“Read it,” Vance said coldly.

Marcus slowly raised his head, his eyes hollow and bloodshot. “I want my phone call. My lawyer said you can't hold me without a formal arraignment hearing—'”

“Your lawyer dropped you three hours ago, Mr. Hayes,” Vance interrupted, his voice cutting through the cell like a razor. “Turns out, once Miller & Sterling realized you used their firm name to draft forged non-disclosure agreements used in federal extortion, they handed over their entire client file to us to save their own licenses.”

Marcus flinched as if he’d been physically struck.

“And that’s just the beginning,” Vance continued, leaning against the cold concrete wall and folding his arms. “Federal prosecutors have expanded your charges. In addition to wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and interstate extortion, you are now officially facing federal felony domestic assault, witness intimidation, and—thanks to the classified documents we found in your corporate safe—espionage-adjacent handling of military intelligence.”

Marcus scrambled off the cot, stumbling forward until he hit the metal table, his hands gripping the edges so hard his knuckles turned ghostly white.

“No... no, you don't understand!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking into a desperate, high-pitched whine. “It was just a misunderstanding! It was a domestic dispute! Couples argue! You can't ruin my life over a family argument!”

Vance stared at him with absolute, unyielding contempt.

“You didn't just argue with your wife, Marcus,” Vance said quietly. “You terrorized her. You threatened her family. And worst of all, you picked a fight with an Army CID Supervisory Special Agent who treats her family like a sacred oath.”

Vance turned toward the open cell door, pausing on the threshold.

“Enjoy your stay in Cell Block B, Marcus. Your arraignment is at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Sleep tight.”

The heavy steel door slammed shut with a thunderous echo, locking automatically behind him, leaving Marcus alone in the absolute darkness of his own making.
