CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT WAS HELPLESS

The kick landed harder than the doctors said my body could survive.

Pain exploded through my abdomen.

The heart monitor screamed.

For one terrifying second, I couldn't breathe.

Daniel calmly adjusted the sleeve of his expensive suit as if he'd merely stepped over a puddle instead of attacking his pregnant wife.

"Relax," he muttered.

"The baby is still alive."

Vanessa laughed.

"I told you she'd survive. She's stubborn."

She tightened her grip on my wrists against the hospital mattress.

The IV line pulled painfully against my skin.

"You know," Vanessa whispered into my ear, "I've always wanted your life."

"Your house."

"Your husband."

"And now..."

She gently touched my stomach.

"...your baby."

Every word felt colder than the hospital air.

Daniel picked up the divorce agreement again.

"I'll ask one last time."

"Sign."

"You leave with nothing."

"The company."

"The house."

"The investments."

"The trust."

"Everything becomes mine."

I stared at him.

"You already have another woman."

"What more do you want?"

His smile slowly widened.

"I don't want half."

"I want all of it."

Vanessa leaned closer.

"And after the divorce..."

"...Daniel and I will raise your baby."

My heartbeat nearly stopped.

She wasn't joking.

Daniel nodded without hesitation.

"You're sick enough that no judge would ever believe you could be a good mother."

The words hurt more than the kick.

For years, I had helped build Morgan Technologies from a tiny software startup into one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity firms in the country.

Every investor knew Daniel's name.

Almost nobody knew mine.

Because I never wanted the spotlight.

That was my greatest mistake.

People only remembered the face on magazine covers.

Not the woman who wrote the first business plan.

Not the woman who negotiated the funding.

Not the woman who quietly owned forty-nine percent of the company.

Daniel believed I had become weak.

Fragile.

Dependent.

He never realized I had spent the last six months preparing for today.

Every threatening text.

Every secret bank account.

Every fake invoice.

Every affair.

Every illegal transfer.

Everything had been copied.

Stored.

Backed up.

And sent to one person.

My father.

The tiny button sewn into my hospital gown wasn't decorative.

It was transmitting everything live.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

His fingers forced a pen into my palm.

"Sign."

I deliberately let the pen fall.

It rolled across the floor.

His patience disappeared.

His hand lifted.

Before it could reach me—

BANG!

The hospital room door slammed open so violently it struck the wall.

Every nurse outside froze.

Daniel turned.

Vanessa stepped backward.

My father entered wearing a dark overcoat, followed by two attorneys and three detectives.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Take your hands off my daughter."

Nobody moved.

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

"I've spent six months hoping you'd prove me wrong."

"You just proved every suspicion I ever had."

Daniel laughed.

"You can't threaten me."

"I'm the CEO."

My father slowly reached into his coat and placed a thin black folder on the hospital bed.

"No."

"You've only been borrowing the title."

Then he opened the folder.

Inside was a document none of us expected Daniel to see.

The original ownership agreement.

May you like

Signed years before the company ever existed.

And one signature changed everything.
