CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET OWNER

Daniel frowned.
"I've never seen that contract."
"No," my father answered.
"Because you were never supposed to."
One attorney carefully slid the papers across the bed.
Vanessa leaned forward.
Daniel's face slowly lost its color.
There, in black ink, was the truth hidden for nearly a decade.
Morgan Technologies had never belonged to Daniel.
The startup had nearly collapsed before its first investor meeting.
Banks rejected it.
Partners walked away.
Daniel begged for one last chance.
That chance came from one silent investor.
My father.
Using a private holding company, he financed everything.
Every office.
Every employee.
Every expansion.
Every acquisition.
The condition had been simple.
Claire would eventually inherit control.
Not Daniel.
"You..."
Daniel whispered.
"...you funded everything?"
My father nodded.
"I wanted to know whether you loved my daughter..."
"...or my money."
"So I hid my name."
Silence filled the room.
"You failed."
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
"That doesn't matter!"
"Daniel is CEO!"
One of the attorneys smiled politely.
"Was."
He handed another document to the detectives.
"This morning the board voted unanimously."
"Daniel Morgan has been removed."
Daniel laughed nervously.
"You can't remove me."
"My directors are loyal."
"They were."
The attorney pressed a tablet onto the hospital table.
The emergency board meeting appeared on screen.
Every vote.
Every signature.
Every resignation.
Every executive had abandoned him within hours.
Because the evidence from the hidden camera had already reached them.
Not just today's assault.
Months of recordings.
Threats.
Fraud.
Bribery.
Tax crimes.
Corporate espionage.
Everything.
Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.
"Tell them it's fake!"
But another voice interrupted.
"It isn't."
Everyone turned.
The chief financial officer stepped into the room.
Behind him came three senior executives.
Then another.
Then another.
People Daniel had trusted for years.
"We've been helping Claire collect evidence," the CFO said.
"For seven months."
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"You betrayed me?"
"No."
"You betrayed the company."
His phone suddenly began vibrating.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Again.
Again.
The screen filled with notifications.
Accounts frozen.
Board access revoked.
Credit suspended.
Federal investigators requesting interviews.
News alerts.
Morgan Technologies Stock Surges After Emergency Leadership Change.
CEO Removed Amid Criminal Investigation.
Hospital Assault Video Leaks Online.
Vanessa slowly released Daniel's hand.
The confidence vanished from her face.
She quietly stepped away from him.
My father noticed.
"So."
He asked softly.
"Which one of you wants to explain first?"
Neither answered.
Because footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Not police.
Federal agents.
And they weren't there just because of the assault.
May you like
They were carrying sealed boxes labeled:
FINANCIAL EVIDENCE.
