Chapter 1

The blow against the desk didn't hurt nearly as much as realizing that Álvaro Castañeda had been waiting for weeks to catch her defenseless.
Elena Robles still couldn't speak after undergoing surgery on her vocal cords.
Her neck was wrapped in bandages.
Her right arm was numb.
She had only just returned to Benito Juárez Public Middle School in Puebla when the vice principal quietly locked the door to Classroom 17 behind them.
“Today you're going to save us,” Álvaro said, placing a blue folder on the desk in front of her.
“You're going to sign a statement saying you authorized every single transfer.”
Elena slowly shook her head.
Álvaro's smile vanished.
He grabbed her by the throat...
Slammed her forehead against the desk...
Then twisted her arm until a sickening crack echoed through the empty classroom.
“You can't even scream while I forge your signature...”
“Poor mute.”
Pain blurred Elena's vision.
But she never lowered her eyes.
Álvaro mistook her silence for fear.
He had no idea...
She had been pretending not to know the truth for six weeks.
For twelve years, Elena had managed the school's administrative department.
She oversaw payroll.
Scholarships.
Purchasing.
Maintenance contracts.
Everything changed when she uncovered 37 duplicate payments, invoices for computers that had never existed, and deposits sent to a company called Proyectos Educativos del Centro.
She asked too many questions.
A few days later...
During a staff dinner...
She suffered what everyone believed was a severe allergic reaction.
The swelling damaged her vocal cords.
She ended up in surgery.
Álvaro even visited her in the hospital carrying flowers.
He also tried to steal her laptop.
Elena pretended to be asleep while watching him search through her backpack...
Photograph confidential reports...
And steal her digital signature credentials.
That betrayal hurt more than the operation itself.
They had worked together for nine years.
He knew her mother.
He had toasted at her wedding.
And he had always bragged that Elena's honesty was...
“The pride of this school.”
From that moment on...
Elena understood that exposing the missing money wasn't enough.
She needed Álvaro to reveal...
Who else was involved.
Before returning to work...
She secretly replaced her hearing aid with a custom-built device designed by her brother Darío, a telecommunications engineer.
It looked like an ordinary medical device.
In reality...
It encrypted and transmitted audio to three separate destinations:
The school board.
Her attorney.
The State Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
Álvaro forced a pen into her hand.
“Sign.”
Elena let it fall to the floor.
He slapped her hard across the face.
“When this is over...”
“Everyone will believe you stole the money...”
“...and tried to hurt yourself because of the guilt.”
Then...
His eyes caught something.
A tiny red light blinking just behind Elena's ear.
He froze.
Elena smiled.
Álvaro ripped the device off.
Threw it to the floor.
Then crushed it beneath the heel of his shoe.
“Your little trick is over.”
He didn't realize...
The entire transmission had already been safely uploaded to a secure cloud server.
The school bell rang in the hallway.
Álvaro took a slow breath.
He hid the forged documents.
Then pulled a syringe from his pocket.
Elena immediately recognized the label.
It was the same sedative listed in several school purchase orders as...
"Laboratory supplies."
Álvaro slowly stepped toward her.
“Now then...”
“No more scenes.”
Elena suddenly let her body go limp...
As though she had finally surrendered.
Then...
She kicked over the classroom trash can.
The loud crash activated a hidden sensor inside her watch.
Instantly...
The building's electronic security doors locked shut.
Álvaro lunged for the classroom door.
The handle wouldn't move.
“What the hell did you do?”
Elena slowly raised her wrist.
May you like
Two words glowed across the watch's display:
TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.
