Chapter 5 - THE TROJAN HORSEGarza’s smile was slick, the grin of a predator who believed the hunt was already over.

“I’ll ask you one last time, Mrs. Robles,” Garza said, tapping his fingers against his leather holster. “Where are the decryption keys?”

Elena forced her eyes to lock onto his. Her lungs burned for oxygen, and the wound on her neck throbbed with a searing, white-hot agony as the operative behind her tightened his grip. Fresh blood soaked through her bandages, dripping onto the collar of her blouse.

She couldn't speak. But she didn't need to.

With a sudden, violent jerk, Elena stomped her heavy winter boot directly down onto the foot of the man holding her.

Crunch.

The operative howled in pain, his grip instantly loosening as he hopped backward, clutching his crushed toes.

Before Garza or the other guard could react, Elena whipped her right arm around and slammed her palm directly against the control panel of an old emergency drainage pump beside the pillar.

BZZZZZT!

A high-pitched, screeching frequency pierced the air.

It wasn't just a mechanical switch. It was the activation signal for the frequency jammer hidden inside Elena’s modified hearing aid. Within a fraction of a second, a localized electromagnetic pulse swept across the room, instantly frying the operatives' encrypted tactical radios, blinding their night-vision goggles, and cutting off all satellite uplinks to the outside world.

“What the hell? My comms are dead!” the guard shouted, frantically tapping his ear-piece as static hissed loudly.

“Grab her!” Garza barked, his face twisting in sudden fury.

But it was too late.

From the shadows of the upper catwalk, a blinding flash erupted.

BANG! BANG!

Two loud, echoing concussive blasts shook the rafters. Flashbang grenades tumbled through the air, detonating with disorienting roars of white light and thunderous sound.

“Agh! My eyes!” Garza screamed, stumbling backward and shielding his face as white smoke filled the cavernous hall.

Through the haze, a figure dropped gracefully from the catwalk, landing with tactical precision right beside Darío.

It was Magistrate Valenzuela—and behind her stood half a dozen heavily armed federal marshals in full tactical gear, their assault rifles leveled squarely at Garza and his men.

“Commander Ignacio Garza,” Magistrate Valenzuela’s voice boomed through the smoky air, clear and uncompromising. “You are under federal arrest for high treason, kidnapping, conspiracy, and state-sponsored embezzlement.”

Garza blinked furiously against the residual smoke, trying to reach for his sidearm, but a federal marshal kicked the weapon out of his grip and slammed him face-first onto the cold concrete floor.

“Don't even think about it, Commander,” the lead marshal growled, clicking heavy zip-ties around Garza’s wrists.

Darío scrambled to his feet, coughing from the smoke, and rushed over to Elena. He caught her as her knees finally buckled from exhaustion and blood loss.

“Elena! Elena, stay with me!” Darío cried out, pressing his hands against her bleeding neck bandages.

She looked up at him, a faint, exhausted smile touching the corners of her lips. She weakly raised her wrist and tapped her watch.

The screen glowed brightly in the dim light of the abandoned warehouse.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

“Get the medical team in here now!” Valenzuela shouted into her radio, rushing over to kneel beside Elena. She looked down at her with profound respect. “You recorded every single word of their contingency cell, didn't you?”

Elena weakly nodded.

“The entire network... from the school embezzlement to the gubernatorial campaign laundering ring... it's all captured on the federal server right now,” Valenzuela added softly. “You just brought down half the state government.”

As paramedics rushed through the metal doors with a stretcher, lifting Elena gently onto it and placing an oxygen mask over her face, she closed her eyes, finally letting go of the crushing weight she had carried for months.

Sofía was safe.

The corrupt officials were trapped.

The truth was finally out in the open.

Or so they all thought.

As the ambulance doors slammed shut and the siren wailed into the night, neither Elena nor the federal marshals noticed a sleek, black drone silently lifting off from the roof of the water treatment plant, its camera lens locked firmly onto the rear license plate of the ambulance.

And back at the state capital, deep inside the governor's private office, a single man sat alone in the dark, watching the live GPS feed of the ambulance on his monitor—and smiling.
