Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos. Clara, the bride, dropped her bouquet, her jaw hitting the floor as she stared at her new husband. "Julian? What is she talking about? Who is this woman?"
Julian’s face went from pale to a ghastly shade of green. He tried to laugh it off, but his voice cracked high and frantic. "She's lying! She’s just a low-level accountant! Clara, babe, don't listen to her. Security, why are these people still here? Get this crazy woman out!"
But the security guards didn't move. In fact, the head of the venue’s security team was looking at his own tablet, his eyes wide with recognition. He walked past Julian, completely ignoring him, and bowed respectfully to Elena. "M-Madam CEO. We didn't realize you were attending tonight. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the conduct of this guest."
"Guest?" Julian screamed, his voice turning shrill. "I am the groom! I paid for this hall!"
"Actually, Mr. Vance," the security chief turned around, his face stone-cold. "The Plaza Regency is a subsidiary of Meridian Global Holdings. And according to our records, Madam Elena Vance is the Chairperson and majority shareholder of Meridian. Technically, she owns the floor you are standing on."
A collective gasp rippled through the elite crowd. The 'broke single mother' they had all ignored or sneered at was Elena Vance—the reclusive, legendary tech mogul who controlled over forty percent of the venture capital flowing into Silicon Valley. She rarely appeared in public, fiercely protecting her daughter Lily’s privacy from the ruthless paparazzi. Julian had invited her out of obligation because she was a distant cousin of his late father, but he had genuinely believed she was the black sheep of the family—a struggling mom living off a modest trust fund. He had no idea she was the trust fund.
Clara turned on Julian, her eyes flashing with fury. "You told me she was a nobody! You told me your company, Vance Tech, was fully independent!"
"It is! It is!" Julian stammered, grabbing Clara’s hands. "Clara, please, she’s bluffing! She can't just freeze my accounts!"
Right on cue, Julian's phone in his breast pocket began to buzz violently. Then his best man's phone buzzed. Then his business partner's phone buzzed.
Julian pulled out his device with trembling fingers. The screen displayed a red alert from his banking app: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED BY HOLDING INSTITUTION. Below it was an urgent email from his Chief Financial Officer: Julian, what did you do? Meridian Global just pulled our $50 million Series B funding. The board is calling an emergency meeting to remove you as CEO. We are bankrupt by midnight.
Julian dropped the phone. It cracked against the wet, champagne-soaked floorboards. He looked up at Elena, his arrogance completely shattered, replaced by a desperate, pathetic panic. He fell to his knees right in front of her, his expensive white suit soaking up the dirty alcohol.
"Elena... please," he begged, tears mixing with his sweat. "It was a mistake. I was stressed. The pressure of the wedding... I didn't mean to blame Lily. Please don't do this to me. It will ruin everything I've built!"
Elena looked down at him as if he were an annoying insect. She didn't offer a shred of mercy. "When you targeted a child to protect your own ego, you proved exactly what kind of man you are. You built your empire on my money, Julian. And tonight, I am taking every single brick back."

Turning her back on him, Elena took Lily’s hand. "Come, sweetheart. Let's leave this trash behind."
But as they reached the grand double doors of the ballroom, the masked catering staff member from the video—the one Julian had been aggressively arguing with right before the tower fell—stepped forward, blocking their exit. The stranger pulled off their mask, revealing a face that made Julian scream out in terror.
