Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Shadow

The person behind the mask was none other than Vivienne Vance—Julian’s supposedly deceased older sister, who had vanished five years ago under highly suspicious circumstances.
The ballroom went dead silent once again. The drama was compounding so fast the guests couldn't even process it. Clara looked like she was going to faint, holding onto a chair for dear life.
"Vivienne?" Julian gasped, his voice barely a whisper. "No... you're dead. You died in the car accident in Switzerland!"
Vivienne sneered, her eyes locked onto her brother with pure, unadulterated hatred. She wasn't wearing a catering uniform by accident; she had infiltrated the event to deliver a fatal blow. "You wish I died in that crash, Julian. The crash you paid a mechanic to arrange so you could inherit our father's shares in Vance Tech."
The crowd erupted into furious murmurs. A wedding faux pas had just escalated into a high-profile attempted murder confession.
"That's a lie! You're insane!" Julian shrieked, scrambling up from the floor, his eyes wild like a cornered animal. "She's a fraud! Someone call the police!"
"Oh, the police are already on their way, little brother," Vivienne said calmly, pulling a digital recorder from her pocket. "And they aren't coming for me. They're coming for you."
Vivienne turned to Elena, bowing her head slightly. "Thank you, Chairperson Elena. If you hadn't provided me with the security detail and the resources to hide out and heal over the last five years, I would never have survived to see this day."
The puzzle pieces suddenly clicked together in Julian’s mind. The trap hadn't been set tonight. Elena had been playing the long game for half a decade. She hadn't accidentally ended up at a back table at his wedding. She had orchestrated her presence to act as the ultimate executioner.
Julian realized he had never been the predator; he was a rat walking straight into a steel cage. He looked at Clara, pleadingly. "Clara, your family has political power! Call your father, the Senator! Stop this!"
Clara looked at her husband, then at the terrifying power radiating from Elena and Vivienne, and then at the ruined, pathetic man kneeling in champagne. With a cold, calculated expression, Clara unclasped her diamond engagement ring and threw it directly into Julian’s face.
"The wedding is off," Clara hissed. "Dad, call our legal team. I want an annulment before the ink on the license even dries. I am not going down with a criminal."
Just then, the grand doors burst open, and a squad of federal agents in dark suits stepped into the ballroom, their badges glittering under the chandeliers. The lead agent marched straight past the chaotic crowd and stopped right in front of Julian.

"Julian Vance? You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, he let out a guttural scream of rage, glaring at Elena. "You think you won, Elena?! You think you can just destroy me and walk away? I know your secret too! I know where Lily really came from! If I go down, I'm taking your precious daughter’s legacy down with me!"
