Chapter 5 - The Financial Guillotine

For decades, Doña Teresa had maintained the illusion of immense wealth in San Pedro society. The truth, however, was a ugly secret: the Villarreal family estate had been bankrupt for five years. Their entire lifestyle—the country club memberships, Ximena’s European vacations, Teresa’s designer wardrobe—was funded entirely by Valeria’s highly successful logistics corporation.
Inside the interrogation room of the Nuevo León State Prosecutor's Office, the reality of their financial ruin finally crashed down.
A female prosecutor threw a thick stack of financial documents onto the table in front of Teresa and Rodrigo. "Let's talk about fraud," the prosecutor said with a cold smile.
Rodrigo looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Fraud? No, that's my wife’s company..."
"Was your wife's company," the prosecutor corrected. "Until you and your mother forged her signature on a series of corporate loans totaling $1.2 million USD to cover your personal debts and finance a real estate project in Tulum that went bust. We have the bank signatures. We also have the testimony of the bank manager, whom Doña Teresa threatened to ruin if he didn't expedite the funds."
Teresa gasped, her chest heaving. "That girl owed us that money! She married into a legacy! She was nothing before she took our family name!"
"Actually, Doña Teresa, you are the ones who are nothing," the prosecutor retorted. "Valeria has filed for an emergency dissolution of marriage, an absolute severing of all financial ties, and a criminal complaint for identity theft and grand larceny. Because the crimes were committed against a pregnant woman during a state of medical emergency, the aggravating factors remove any possibility of bail."
Behind the double-sided mirror of the interrogation room, Valeria stood watching. She looked pale, but her eyes were no longer filled with the tears of a victim. She held her newborn son, Leo, tightly against her chest. Mateo stood right beside her, his arm wrapped protectively around her shoulders.

"Are you ready to finish this?" Mateo asked softly.
Valeria took a deep breath, looking at the pathetic sight of her husband shivering in a prison jumpsuit. "They thought my life was worth less than a $7,000 vacation. I want them to pay interest."
