Chapter 6 - The Trial of San Pedro

The trial became the trial of the decade in Monterrey. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity every single day. The defense tried desperately to paint Doña Teresa as an aging, traditional matriarch who simply misunderstood the severity of Valeria’s medical condition, and Rodrigo as a confused, panicked young husband.
But the prosecution had a secret weapon.
On the fourth day of the trial, Valeria took the stand. The courtroom fell completely silent as she walked to the witness box, completely ignoring the desperate, begging gaze of Rodrigo from the defense table.
The prosecutor played the 911 audio recording.
The sound of Valeria screaming in agony, followed by the distinct, heavy sound of the deadbolts locking, filled the courtroom. But then, the prosecutor played an audio clip that had never been released to the public. It was a recording from the house's smart-intercom system, captured seconds after the front door had closed.
Rodrigo’s voice could be heard on the porch: "Mom, wait. I hear her crying. She says the water broke. We need to open the door."
Then came Teresa’s voice, clear as a bell, dripping with venom: "If she’s smart, she’ll clean the floor before it stains the marble. Let her rot in there for a week, Rodrigo. If you turn back now, I will disinherit you before we reach the airport. Choose."
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Several jurors covered their mouths in horror. Rodrigo buried his face in his hands, shaking uncontrollably, while Doña Teresa sat rigid as stone, realizing that her own arrogance had been her downfall.
The judge didn't even deliberate for a full hour.
The verdict was unanimous: Guilty on all counts.
Doña Teresa was sentenced to 18 years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary for criminal confinement, grand fraud, and corporate extortion. Because of her age, her lawyers begged for house arrest, but since she no longer owned a home and the state had seized all her remaining assets to pay back Valeria, the judge denied the request. She would serve her time in a concrete cell.
Rodrigo was sentenced to 12 years for attempted homicide by omission and domestic abuse. Ximena received 4 years as an accessory to fraud and criminal neglect.
As the guards stepped forward to lead the family away in chains, Teresa lost her mind. She broke away from the guards, lunging toward the gallery where Valeria sat.
"You ruined us!" Teresa shrieked, her face twisted in demonic rage. "You stole my son! You stole our money! You are a curse on our bloodline!"

Valeria stood up slowly. She didn't flinch. She looked down at the broken, screaming woman who used to terrify her.
"I didn't ruin you, Teresa," Valeria said, her voice calm, clear, and cutting through the courtroom chaos. "You valued a $7,000 trip over a human life. You built your empire on my money and my silence. The silence is over. And your empire is gone."
