Chapter 7 - The Witness SpeaksBy 9:00 PM, the local news stations were broadcasting live from outside the municipal building.

Reporters shoved microphones toward anyone wearing a suit, desperate for a soundbite about the collapse of the Vale regime. But the most sought-after interview of the night wasn't with a politician, a judge, or a federal investigator.

It was with a twenty-one-year-old barista.

Emily Monroe stood on the front steps of the municipal building, the cool night air brushing against her face as camera lights flashed around her like lightning.

"Miss Monroe!" shouted a reporter from a statewide network. "You were the one who filmed the incident at Mason Creek Coffee House today. Did you have any idea that recording a simple slap would bring down an entire political dynasty?"

Emily looked directly into the camera lens, her voice clear, steady, and unshakeable.

"I didn't record a simple slap," Emily said firmly. "I recorded a bully who thought he owned human beings. I recorded a system that expected everyone to look down, shut up, and take it."

"What would you say to Trent Vale right now if you could?" another reporter asked.

Emily smiled slightly—not with malice, but with the quiet confidence of someone who had watched a giant fall.

"I'd tell him what Nia Carter told him in the café," Emily said. "You aren't capable of being scared yet. But you will be."

Across the state, inside a secure holding cell at the county detention facility, Trent Vale sat on a steel cot in a standard orange jumpsuit. His blond hair was disheveled, his eyes hollow and bloodshot.

The television mounted outside his cell door was playing the live broadcast of Emily’s interview.

Trent stared at the screen, his hands trembling as the harsh reality finally, crushingly, settled into his bones.

The Vales were gone. The empire was dust. And the name that had once made an entire city tremble was now nothing more than a cautionary tale.
