Chapter 3 - The Midnight AuditWhile Adrian and Celeste slept in their multi-million-dollar penthouse, I sat in the dim light of my home office, watching the blue light of three monitors illuminate my face. Beside me in the bassinet, my daughter, Elena, let out a soft, milky sigh.

My lawyer, David Vance, popped up on the Zoom call, looking equally exhausted and exhilarated.

“Everything is locked down, Mia,” David said, his voice clipped and urgent. “The forensic audit of the parent company’s overseas subsidiaries is complete. Celeste didn’t just embezzle operational funds; she routed corporate capital directly into a shell account registered under her maiden name—and yours.”

“Mine?” I raised an eyebrow.

“She tried to frame you, Mia. Six months ago, right before the divorce was finalized, large sums were funneled through an IP address traced back to your old home laptop. She wanted you to look like a corporate thief so Adrian could freeze your alimony and seize your personal trust.”

A cold, beautiful laugh escaped my lips. “Amateur hour. She forgot that I wrote the original cybersecurity protocols for the firm before Adrian even made partner.”

“Precisely. The digital signature on the transfer is 100% Celeste’s personal laptop ID. Not yours. Furthermore…” David paused, a grim smile touching his lips. “The paternity test results are back from the accredited lab. I have three physical, notarized copies right here.”

“And?”

“Adrian is not the biological father of the child Celeste is carrying.”

I leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling as the final piece of the puzzle clicked into place. The irony was so sharp it tasted like copper.

“Get the bailiffs, the federal marshals, and the media contacts ready,” I whispered. “Saturday morning is going to be very, very crowded.”
