Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Echo

The air in the cold piazza turned to ice. The mother, Elena, felt her knees give way as those five words hung in the mist: “They have my daughter’s eyes.”

Her husband, Mark, grabbed her arm to steady her, his knuckles white. "What are you talking about?" Mark demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of panic and protective fury. "You’re a stranger. Girls, get away from her right now!"

But the three little triplets—Lia, Maya, and Chloe—didn't move. In fact, three-year-old Lia turned her head, pressed her cheek against the old woman’s faded brown coat, and whispered a single word that shattered Elena’s world completely:

"Nonna."

Elena gasped, clutching her chest. "They've never used that word before. We don't speak Italian at home. Mark... how do they know that word?"

The old woman, whose hands were still shaking uncontrollably, gently wrapped her arms around the three children. Up close, beneath the dirt and the frayed fabric of her rags, her posture possessed an unmistakable, haunting elegance.

"My name is Rosa," the woman whispered, her voice like grinding stones. "Twenty-five years ago, my daughter Sophia was stolen from this very square. The police told me she drowned in the river. They gave me a tiny body in a sealed casket. But I knew... a mother always knows. My heart never stopped burning."

Rosa slowly lifted her eyes to look directly into Elena's face.

"I don't know who you are, young lady," Rosa said softly. "But these children did not run to me by accident. Blood calls to blood. And their eyes... they are the exact shade of sea-green jade that my Sophia had."

Mark stepped forward, pulling his phone out. "This is insane. You're a delusional homeless woman scaring my family. Elena, grab the kids. We’re leaving for the hotel right now."

Elena moved instinctively toward her daughters, but as she reached down to scoop up Chloe, her fingers caught the collar of Chloe’s jacket, pulling back the child's hair. There, right behind Chloe's left ear, was a small, star-shaped birthmark.

Elena’s eyes widened in horror. She looked at Rosa. The old woman slowly pulled back her own messy gray hair, exposing the skin behind her left ear.

A matching star-shaped birthmark carved into her skin.

"It’s a genetic mark in my family," Rosa whispered, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "It skips a generation. My mother had it. I have it. My lost daughter didn't have it... but her children would."

Elena fell to her knees on the wet cobblestones, the rain finally beginning to pour. "No..." she sobbed, looking at Mark with pure terror. "Mark... am I... am I adopted?"

Mark’s face went dead pale. He didn't answer. He couldn't. Because in his pocket, his phone vibrated with an urgent text message from an unknown number.

He glanced down at the screen. The text read: GET THE GIRLS AWAY FROM ROSA IMMEDIATELY. IF SHE RECOGNIZES YOU, ALL THREE OF YOUR DAUGHTERS WILL DIE TONIGHT.
