Chapter 2 - The Secret In The Attic

Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He forcefully grabbed the girls, pulling them away from Rosa despite their tearful screams.
"Mark, stop! What are you doing?!" Elena cried out, trying to stop him.
"We are going. NOW!" Mark roared, his composure completely shattered. He practically dragged Elena and the three sobbing children into a waiting taxi, leaving Rosa sitting alone on the wet stone steps, watching them go with a look of profound, tragic realization.
During the ride back to their rented villa on the outskirts of Florence, silence heavy enough to crush bones filled the car. Elena stared out the window, her mind racing. She had grown up believing she was the biological daughter of Arthur and Evelyn Vance, wealthy antique dealers from Boston. But she had never looked like them. She had always felt like a stranger in her own skin.
When they reached the villa, Mark immediately locked all the doors, drew the heavy velvet curtains, and paced the floor, furiously typing on his phone.
"Mark, talk to me!" Elena demanded, putting the triplets down for a nap in the adjacent bedroom. "Who texted you? Why are you acting like a madman?"
Mark stopped. He looked at his wife, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of guilt and fear. "Elena... there are things about my past—about our past—that I never told you."
"What things?!"
"My father didn't die in a car crash when I was ten," Mark confessed, his voice barely an audible whisper. "He was a high-ranking enforcer for the Moretti syndicate—the most powerful crime family in Northern Italy. And twenty-five years ago, he was assigned a job."
Elena felt the room spin. "What job?"
"To kidnap the heiress of the rival family—the Castiglione empire," Mark said, dropping to his chair. "The Castigliones controlled half of Tuscany. The Morettis wanted to break them. My father took the child... a three-year-old girl named Sophia Castiglione."
Elena covered her mouth, her breath hitching in her throat. "Sophia... Rosa's daughter?"
"My father was supposed to kill the girl," Mark continued, tears welling in his eyes. "But he couldn't do it. Instead, he faked her death, forged adoption papers, and smuggled her out of Italy to an American couple in Boston who couldn't have children of their own. The Vance family."
Elena felt as if the floor had dropped out beneath her feet. "I... I am Sophia Castiglione?"
"Yes," Mark choked out. "And my family found out last week that you were back in Italy. The text message... it was from my uncle, the head of the Moretti family. He said if Rosa finds out you are alive, she will reclaim the Castiglione fortune—a fortune that the Morettis stole twenty-five years ago. They will kill you and our daughters to protect their empire!"

Suddenly, the power in the villa went pitch black.
Outside, the heavy thud of tactical boots echoed on the wooden porch.
