Chapter 8 - The Queen of Florence

SIX MONTHS LATERThe sun shone brightly over Florence, washing the ancient stone buildings in warm gold. The Piazza della Signoria was filled with music, laughter, and the gentle chatter of tourists.

In the center of the square, the grand opening of the Sophia & Rosa Castiglione Children’s Foundation was underway. The Moretti syndicate had been completely dismantled by Interpol, its leaders imprisoned for life, and their vast ill-gotten wealth seized and legally returned to its rightful owner: Sophia Castiglione.

Elena—now officially recognizing her birth name, Sophia—stood on the stage in an elegant emerald-green dress. Beside her stood Mark, his arm wrapped around her waist, completely cleared of all charges due to his undercover work with federal authorities.

Beside them sat Rosa, dressed in a magnificent silk outfit, looking noble, radiant, and loved.

Three little girls in matching pink dresses ran across the stage, their joyful laughter ringing out over the crowd. Lia, Maya, and Chloe ran straight toward Rosa, jumping onto her lap just as they had done on that cold, wet afternoon months ago.

"Nonna! Look! Balloons!" Chloe squeaked, pointing at the sky.

Rosa kissed each of her granddaughters on the cheek, tears of happiness gleaming in her eyes. "Yes, my loves. Beautiful balloons."

Sophia stepped up to the microphone, looking out over the huge crowd of press, locals, and visitors.

"Six months ago, I was a woman who didn't know who she truly was," Sophia spoke, her voice clear and strong. "A chance encounter in this very square changed my life forever. Love brought my children to a stranger. But blood recognized what the heart already knew."

The crowd applauded wildly. Photographers flashed their cameras, capturing the image of the reunited Castiglione family—a photo that would dominate headlines around the world for weeks to come.

As the ceremony concluded and the family walked toward their private estate, Mark leaned down to Sophia, whispering softly, "Are you truly happy, Sophia?"

Sophia looked at her three daughters playing in the sun, then at her mother who walked proudly beside her, and finally at the man who had risked everything to save them.

"I am," Sophia smiled.

She turned to look back at the grand stone steps where Rosa had once sat alone in rags.

There, standing near the shadow of the old archway, sat a mysterious man in a dark trench coat, watching the family through dark sunglasses. He slowly pulled down his glasses, revealing a pair of piercing, sea-green jade eyes—the exact same eyes as Sophia and the triplets.

He smiled a dark, knowing smile, adjusted his collar, and vanished into the crowd.

Sophia froze, her heart stopping in her chest.
