Chapter 4 - Blood Promises

In the small, hidden basement beneath a ruined 15th-century chapel—a secret sanctuary kept by Rosa for decades—a small oil lamp illuminated the damp stone walls.

Rosa wrapped the triplets in warm wool blankets and fed them hot broth, her aged hands moving with sudden purpose and strength. The weak, hopeless old woman from the piazza was gone; in her place stood a woman who had survived twenty-five years of grief fueled only by vengeance.

"I never believed you were dead," Rosa said softly, gently stroking Elena’s hair as Elena sat in shock. "When they gave me that closed casket, I swore on the grave of my ancestors that I would stay in that square every single day until the truth revealed itself. I let the world think I went mad. I let the Morettis think I was harmless, broken trash."

"Mark... my husband... he tried to protect us," Elena wept. "I don't know if he survived the fire."

"Mark Vance is a Moretti by blood," Rosa said, her voice turning cold as ice. "His father took you from me."

"He didn't know until recently!" Elena defended him desperately. "He saved my life, Rosa!"

"Call me Mamma," Rosa corrected softly, a tear slipping down her eye. "And if your husband is truly innocent, God will protect him. But right now, we must prepare for war. The Morettis believe the Castiglione bloodline is extinct. They have built an empire on stolen blood money, bribing judges, politicians, and police chiefs."

Rosa walked over to an old wooden chest tucked in the corner of the cellar. She pulled out a rusty iron key, unlocked it, and lifted the lid. Inside lay a leather-bound journal and a heavy silver signet ring bearing the crest of a roaring lion holding a broken sword.

"This is your father’s ring," Rosa said, placing it in Elena’s hand. "And this journal contains every offshore account, every blackmailed official, and every illegal wire transfer the Moretti family made when they stole our legacy. Your father died trying to protect this evidence."

Suddenly, the metal trapdoor leading down to the cellar rattled violently.

Elena jumped up, her heart stopping.

A voice called out from above, echoed and distorted through the wooden floorboards.

"Sophia! Rosa! Open up! I know you're down there!"

Elena gasped. It was Mark's voice—but he wasn't alone. Heavy, deliberate footsteps surrounded the chapel above.
