Chapter 2 - THE POISON IN THE TEABy 3:00 AM, Emily was safe inside my farmhouse. I double-bolted the heavy oak doors, pulled down the blackout shades, and activated the high-tech security system I had installed years ago—a system the locals thought was just paranoia, but was actually built to withstand a siege.

I sat beside Emily on the sofa, wrapping a warm blanket around her bruised shoulders. She was still shivering, her eyes wide and haunted.
"Mom... the baby..." Emily whispered, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks. "I wanted that baby so much. I felt sick for weeks, but Victoria kept bringing me this special herbal tea... she said it was an old family remedy for morning sickness..."
A cold rage burned through my veins.
"The tea, Emily," I said gently. "Did it have a faint bitter smell? Like crushed almonds?"
Emily looked at me in shock. "How... how did you know?"
"Pennyroyal and heavy metal derivatives," I said, my fists clenching beneath the table. "It’s an old, untraceable method used to induce miscarriages and cause neurological instability. Victoria didn't want you unstable because of pregnancy, Emily. She was poisoning you so they could declare you mentally incompetent!"
Emily gasped, clutching her chest as the horror set in. "If I was declared incompetent... Brandon would gain full power of attorney over my estate..."
"And he could transfer your $20 million trust fund directly into his bank account without your signature," I finished.
Suddenly, my laptop beeped with an incoming encrypted email. It was from Marcus, my former technical investigator at the state prosecutor's office. Attached was a dark-web financial ledger he had managed to decrypt from the server trace I gave him.
My eyes scanned the screen, and what I saw made my breath hitch.
"It's worse than we thought," I muttered.
"What is it, Mom?" Emily asked.
"The money Brandon owes isn't just a loan," I said, pointing at the screen showing massive transfer logs disguised as dummy shipping invoices. "The Holloway family business is bankrupt. They’ve been laundering money for a human trafficking ring operating out of the Eastern seaport. Brandon used their capital to buy high-risk crypto options and lost $30 million. If he doesn't deliver your trust fund money by sunrise, the syndicate isn't just going to ruin him... they're going to execute the entire family."
Before Emily could process the news, the power in my house abruptly went out.

The entire farmhouse plunged into pitch darkness.
Outside, the quiet hum of the night was shattered by the crunch of heavy footsteps on the gravel driveway.
