Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS OF THE ESTATE

The silence that settled over the estate after the police sirens faded was heavy and suffocating.
The paramedics arrived twenty minutes later. Olivia refused to go to the hospital until she knew her baby was safe. A mobile ultrasound unit confirmed that the infant’s heartbeat was strong and steady, though Olivia was put on strict bed rest due to high stress and low blood pressure caused by the drugs Diane had been sneaking into her tea.
While the medical team tended to Olivia in the guest room, Margaret sat in the master study on the main floor. The room was lined with mahogany bookshelves, filled with the legacy of Olivia's late mother, Victoria Carter.
Margaret’s hands flew across her encrypted military laptop. As an Inspector General, she had clearance to pull financial records that standard police officers couldn't access without weeks of subpoenas.
What she found made her blood run cold.
"Olivia," Margaret said softly as she walked into the guest room an hour later, holding a thick stack of printed documents. "We have a massive problem."
Olivia looked up from her bed, her hand resting protectively over her belly. "What is it, Mom? The trust?"
"It’s not just the trust," Margaret said, sitting on the edge of the bed and spreading the papers out. "Ethan wasn't acting alone. He couldn't have executed these forged transfers without high-level authorization. The documents showing the transfer of your mother's $15 million estate out of your family trust weren't signed over to Ethan."
Olivia frowned. "Then who were they signed to?"
"A shell corporation based in Delaware," Margaret replied, pointing to a name on the paper: Vanguard Legacy Holdings. "And do you know who the primary shareholder of Vanguard Legacy Holdings is?"
"Diane?" Olivia guessed.
"No," Margaret said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Your father's former business partner. General Thomas Vance."
Olivia gasped, her breath catching in her throat. General Thomas Vance was a legendary figure in military logistics—and her father's closest friend before he passed away four years ago. Vance had given the eulogy at her father’s funeral. He was the man who had recommended Ethan to Olivia three years ago.
"General Vance introduced me to Ethan..." Olivia realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces suddenly aligning in her mind. "It was never a chance meeting at the charity gala. It was arranged."
"It was a coordinated long-game," Margaret confirmed, her eyes blazing with fury. "Ethan was assigned to marry you, isolate you, and manipulate the trust. Once you were pregnant, they sped up the timeline. They needed an heir born under Ethan’s name to solidify legal claim to the estate’s land rights."
"Land rights?" Olivia asked, confused. "Mom, it’s just an old family house in Boston. Why would a military General care about this estate?"
Margaret walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the estate’s vast, wooded 200-acre backyard.
"Because your mother didn't just leave you a house, Olivia," Margaret revealed, looking out into the dark woods. "Before she died, Victoria was a Senior Chemical Director for defense contracts. This land sits on top of a decommissioned Cold War underground research laboratory. The government sold it back to your mother's family in the 1980s."
Olivia sat bolt upright. "What was inside that laboratory?"
Before Margaret could answer, the lights in the entire mansion suddenly went black.
The backup generator didn't kick in.
Out in the driveway, the sound of heavy tires crunching over gravel echoed through the night.

Margaret pulled a silenced 9mm pistol from her shoulder holster in less than a second.
"Stay behind me," Margaret commanded softly. "They aren't waiting for the legal process. They’re coming to destroy the evidence."
