Chapter 3 - MIDNIGHT AMBUSH

The estate fell into pitch blackness, illuminated only by the pale silver moonlight streaming through the high windows.
"Mom, what's happening?" Olivia whispered, her pulse racing as she reached for her shoes.
"Vance knows Ethan got caught," Margaret said, stepping away from the window and clicking off the safety on her sidearm. "He knows the CID will trace the shell company directly to him within twelve hours. He’s cutting ties."
Downstairs, the sound of heavy glass shattering echoed through the foyer.
Three dark figures wearing tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and suppressed submachine guns slipped silently into the house through the broken patio doors. These weren't regular criminals; their movements were synchronized, precise, and fast. They were elite military contractors.
"They aren't here to rob us," Margaret whispered. "They're here to execute a clean-up operation. They're going to burn the house down with us inside and make it look like an electrical fire caused by the storm."
"What about my baby?" Olivia’s voice trembled, but a sudden surge of maternal instinct replaced her fear with ice-cold focus. "I am not dying in this house."
"You're damn right you aren't," Margaret said grimly. "Follow me. We take the service elevator down to the basement."
Margaret led Olivia down the darkened secondary hallway. Years of living on military bases and conducting tactical operations meant Margaret moved without making a sound.
Suddenly, a tactical flashlight beam swept across the hallway behind them.
"Target sighted upstairs," a rough voice muttered into a radio comms unit. "Proceeding with fire protocol."
Margaret turned, leaned around the corner, and fired three silenced rounds in rapid succession. The lead contractor dropped instantly. The second contractor returned fire, bullets ripping through the antique wallpaper and sending plaster exploding into the air.
"Go! Go!" Margaret shoved Olivia toward the heavy steel door of the service elevator.
Olivia slapped her hand against the control panel, but the power was cut. "It’s dead!"
"Step back!" Margaret pulled a tactical bypass key from her belt, jammed it into the manual override slot beneath the keycard reader, and pulled down with all her weight. The heavy iron door slid open manually with a screech of metal.
"Get in!"
Olivia scrambled inside the shaft just as bullets tore through the drywall where she had been standing seconds before. Margaret jumped in after her and pulled the emergency manual brake lever, dropping the elevator platform down into the dark shaft, landing hard on the concrete floor of the sub-basement.
They crashed into the pitch-black darkness below just as an explosion echoed from the upper floors above. A fireball erupted down the elevator shaft, throwing heat and smoke over them.
Ethan’s co-conspirators had just set the house on fire.
Coughing through the thick smoke, Olivia wiped dust from her eyes. Margaret flipped on a tactical flashlight attached to her barrel.
The light illuminated a massive, dust-covered steel blast door marked with faded red military warnings:

"Mom..." Olivia breathed, looking at the door. "This was under my house the whole time?"
"Yes," Margaret said, pulling out a heavy brass key wrapped in a leather sheath that she had worn around her neck for twenty years. "And this is where your father hid the truth about General Vance."
