Chapter 7 - THE TWIST IN THE WILL

Three weeks later.
The federal courtroom in downtown Boston was packed with reporters, military personnel, and legal representatives from across the country.
Ethan Brooks and Diane Brooks sat at the defense table in handcuffs, wearing orange prison jumpsuits. General Thomas Vance sat at a separate table, flanked by four federal defense attorneys, looking defeated and aged ten years.
Olivia sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant navy-blue dress. Her pregnant belly was prominent, her skin glowing with health, her bruises now completely healed. Beside her sat Margaret, impeccably dressed in her full Army Colonel dress uniform, decorated with medals.
The presiding federal judge knocked his gavel on the wooden bench.
"Court is in session," Judge Harrison announced. "We are here to finalize the criminal indictments against Thomas Vance, Ethan Brooks, and Diane Brooks, as well as resolve the emergency petition regarding the Carter Family Trust."
Vance’s lead attorney stood up. "Your Honor, while my client accepts full responsibility for financial irregularities, we contend that the 200-acre Boston estate property rightfully belongs to Vanguard Legacy Holdings under the land transfer agreement executed by Victoria Carter in 2018. Therefore, Olivia Carter Brooks has no legal claim to evict my client’s corporate entity from the site."
Olivia stood up slowly, stepping toward the podium with her mother by her side.
"Your Honor," Olivia said clearly, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "My late mother was smarter than General Vance ever anticipated. She knew Vance was trying to manipulate her estate long before she died."
Olivia pulled a thick, wax-sealed leather envelope from her briefcase and handed it to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.
"What is this?" Judge Harrison asked, breaking the wax seal.
"That is the true Last Will and Testament of Victoria Carter," Olivia revealed. "Executed in secret with the United States Department of the Navy."
The judge opened the document and began reading. As his eyes scanned the pages, a look of profound shock spread across his face.
"My mother didn't just leave me the house," Olivia explained to the courtroom. "She left the entire 200-acre estate, including the underground research vault, under a federal diplomatic protection clause. Under Section 4 of that document, any attempt by a military officer to unlawfully seize or transfer the property automatically triggers an immediate forfeiture of all assets, rank, and pension owned by the perpetrator—and transfers those assets directly into a legal trust for my unborn child."
General Vance stood up violently, knocking his chair back. "THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! I destroyed that will!"
"You destroyed the copy in my father's safe, General," Margaret said, turning to look at Vance with absolute triumph. "You forgot that my wife was a government defense contractor. She filed the original inside the classified vault at the Pentagon."
The judge slammed his gavel down hard.

"General Thomas Vance," Judge Harrison declared, "Your corporate entities are hereby dissolved. All personal and military assets totaling $42 million are immediately seized and awarded to Olivia Carter Brooks and her heir as restitution for physical, emotional, and financial damages."
Ethan slumped forward on his table, weeping uncontrollably. Diane fainted on the spot, slipping off her chair onto the floor.
