Chapter 4 - THE RED FILE

The massive steel blast door groaned as Margaret turned the ancient mechanical lock system. Dust rained down from the ceiling as the heavy seal broke, releasing a rush of cold, sterile air that had been trapped underground for decades.

They stepped inside Project Ares.

Unlike the burning mansion above them, the underground facility had its own independent emergency power grid—a chemical battery system designed to last for fifty years without external maintenance. As they stepped across the threshold, faint orange halogen strips flickered to life down a long, white concrete corridor.

"Your father didn't die of a heart attack four years ago, Olivia," Margaret said quietly as they walked down the corridor, her gun held ready. "He was poisoned."

Olivia stopped dead in her tracks, her hand flying to her mouth. "What?!"

"Your father found out that General Vance was illegally selling biological defense research to private foreign defense contractors," Margaret revealed. "When your father threatened to go to the Secretary of Defense, Vance had him eliminated. But before your father died, he managed to transfer all the evidence onto a secure server hidden right inside this vault."

They arrived at a central control room filled with retro computing terminals, reel-to-reel magnetic tapes, and a modern, high-encryption server tower that looked completely out of place against the 1980s technology.

Margaret stepped up to the server and pressed her thumb against a biometric scanner. The system chimed softly: ACCESS GRANTED: COLONEL MARGARET CARTER.

A file popped up on the monitor screen: OPERATION DEAD DROP - VANCE, THOMAS.

Olivia leaned over the screen, reading through the decrypted logs. "It’s all here... the bank accounts, the overseas wire transfers, the hit contracts... Ethan wasn't just a bad husband. He was Vance’s bagman!"

"Ethan’s father owed millions in illegal gambling debts to Vance's syndicate," Margaret explained, reading the financial trails. "Vance wiped Ethan’s family debt in exchange for Ethan seducing you, getting control of this property, and finding the physical access key to this server room."

"They needed me to sign the trust transfer so they could demolish the house and excavate this vault without raising red flags," Olivia realized, rage boiling in her veins. "And once I signed it... I was supposed to have a 'fatal complication' during childbirth."

"Exactly," Margaret said.

Suddenly, a loud metallic thud echoed from the elevator shaft behind them.

The contractors were coming down.

"They used thermal imaging," Margaret said, checking her laptop screen which showed the security cameras in the elevator shaft. "They know we’re down here. And they brought explosives."

Olivia looked around the control room. Her eyes landed on a large, red emergency override switch labeled: BASEMENT PURGE SYSTEM - HALON GAS.

"Mom," Olivia said, a cold, calculating smile spreading across her face for the first time. "Does this halon gas system still work?"

May you like

"It’s on an independent pneumatic tank," Margaret replied, catching her daughter's drift. "Why?"

"Because," Olivia said, grabbing a pair of oxygen rebreather masks from an emergency locker on the wall. "Ethan always told me I was too weak to defend myself. It’s time to prove him wrong."
