Chapter 1 - THE BRUTAL RECKONINGThe air in the subterranean laundry hallway grew suffocatingly thin. Overhead, the rhythmic thrum-thrum of the massive commercial washing machines sounded like a war drum counting down the seconds to execution.

Mateo stood there, the jagged purple scar over his left eyebrow twitching under the harsh fluorescent lights. In his right hand, a suppressed Sig Sauer hung loose and heavy. Beside him, the man with the cheap red tie grinned—a nervous, sweat-slicked smirk of a traitor who thought he had finally backed the winning horse.

"It’s not personal, Dominic," Mateo sneered, his Italian accent thickening as the adrenaline spiked. "The Syndicate offered absolute immunity in the Northside territories, and a clean slate in Palermo. You’ve grown soft, old man. You sit in your penthouse sipping aged Barolo while the world burns. We’re just taking back what’s ours."

Dominic Moretti didn't flinch. He didn’t reach for his gun. He simply tilted his head, his cold, slate-gray eyes locking onto the man he had trusted like a brother for over a decade.

"Immunity?" Dominic’s voice was a low, velvet-wrapped razor blade. "Mateo, do you honestly believe a vulture like Don Vincenzo keeps promises to scavengers?"

Before Mateo could pull the trigger, Thomas Hale moved.

With the terrifying speed of a striking viper, Thomas closed the gap, slamming his left palm upward into Mateo’s wrist. The suppressed pistol fired into the concrete floor, sending up a shower of gray dust. With his right hand, Thomas drove the butt of his Beretta into Mateo's temple. The traitor collapsed instantly, a dead weight hitting the wet linoleum.

The man in the red tie panicked, raising his weapon, but Dominic’s other guards opened fire in unison. Three muffled thwacks echoed down the narrow tunnel. Red tie dropped before his finger could even squeeze the trigger.

Silence crashed back over the hallway, heavier than before.

Dominic looked down at Mateo, who was groaning, blood pooling beneath his ear. The crime boss nudged the unconscious man's face with the tip of his polished Italian leather shoe.

"Tie him up," Dominic ordered. "We're taking him with us. He’s going to introduce us to Don Vincenzo’s little welcoming committee in the parking garage."

Amelia stood frozen against the steam-vent pipe, her blue microfiber cloth still clutched in her trembling hand like a talisman. The reality of blood, death, and absolute criminal power was no longer just a rumor from the evening news; it was inches from her sneakers.

Dominic turned to her, his gaze instantly softening from a predator's stare into something startlingly human.

"You handled that well for a woman who cleans mirrors, Amelia," he said, stepping closer.

"I... I want to go home," she whispered, tears of shock finally blurring her vision.

Dominic shook his head slowly. "The moment you saved my life, Amelia Carter, your old life ceased to exist. Vincenzo's men saw your face. If you walk out of this hotel alone, you won't live to see the sunrise. From this second on, your safety is my responsibility."

He extended a hand. She looked at it—strong, calloused, ringed with heavy gold—and slowly, terrifyingly, placed her smaller, trembling hand in his.

"To the parking garage," Dominic commanded. "Let's go greet our guests."
