Chapter 7 - THE AFTERMATH IN THE CLOUDSThe gunshot echoed through the expansive penthouse, followed by a heavy, profound silence that seemed to swallow even the sound of the rain lashing against the windows outside.

Vincenzo Moretti crumpled to the floor, his reign over the Chicago underworld ending right where it had plotted its final betrayal.

Marco and the surviving henchmen stared in horror, completely broken. Thomas kicked their weapons away and zip-tied their wrists behind their backs with ruthless efficiency.

Dominic stood over his uncle’s body for a long, quiet moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he holstered his weapon, turned around, and walked back toward the open elevator.

Amelia was still crouched inside the cabin, her knees pulled up to her chest, her face pale.

Dominic extended a steady hand down to her.

"It's over, Amelia," he said softly. "You're safe."

Amelia looked up at his outstretched hand, then past him at the wreckage of the penthouse, and finally at the open Chicago skyline glittering through the shattered glass. She took a deep, shuddering breath and placed her hand in his. He pulled her gently to her feet.

"What happens now?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "The police... the media... half of Chicago's elite are tied to this hotel."

Dominic smiled faintly, leading her out of the elevator toward the private balcony overlooking the city. "The police in this city know better than to ask questions about family business at the Bellhaven Grand. As for the media—by morning, this will simply be reported as a tragic gas leak on the upper floors."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a heavy black velvet box, and opened it. Inside rested a vintage diamond ring that caught the amber glow of the penthouse lights.

"You saved my life twice tonight, Amelia Carter," Dominic said, his voice carrying a quiet, absolute certainty that brook no argument. "You have sharper instincts, more courage, and a clearer mind than anyone currently on my payroll. I need someone I can trust completely. Will you stay by my side?"

Amelia looked at the ring, then up into his slate-gray eyes. She realized then that the ordinary hotel maid was gone forever—and in her place stood a queen of the Chicago underworld.

"Only if I get to keep my own security detail," she replied with a faint, daring smile.

Dominic laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed through the empty penthouse. "Consider it done."
