Chapter 2 - THE MONDAY MORNING EARTHQUAKEBy 8:00 AM on Monday, the financial district of Manhattan had ground to a halt.

Every major news outlet, financial blog, and gossip rag carried the exact same headline, plastered across high-resolution photographs taken on the grand marble steps of the Ravenshaw Foundation gala:
THE BILLIONAIRE AND THE PARIAH: GABRIEL RAVENSHAW ANNOUNCES ENGAGEMENT TO AMELIA CARTER.
In a penthouse office overlooking Central Park, Julian Vale stared at his tablet screen so hard his knuckles turned white. The morning coffee in his hand remained untouched, cooling rapidly on his mahogany desk.
"Explain this," Julian said, his voice dangerously soft as he looked up at his lead PR strategist, Marcus.
Marcus swallowed hard, adjusting his glasses. "We don't know, Mr. Vale. According to sources inside Ravenshaw Industries, they filed the official intent-to-marry documentation with the city clerk at 7:30 AM. It’s ironclad. Ravenshaw’s legal team locked down the public registry within minutes."
"Amelia doesn't have that kind of leverage," Julian muttered, standing up so abruptly his chair rolled back and hit the wall. "She was broken. She was isolated. She didn't even have a credit card in her own name that I hadn't monitored."
"She’s not isolated anymore," Marcus warned. "Ravenshaw just put his entire corporate shield around her. If you touch her estate now, or if Arthur Ferris tries anything with the custody hearing, Ravenshaw Industries will treat it as an act of corporate war."
Julian’s jaw tightened. A dark, ugly emotion twisted his features—the sudden, violent realization that his favorite toy had just slipped out of his grasp and armed itself with nuclear codes.
He picked up his phone and dialed a familiar number. It rang twice before a cold, clipped voice answered.
"State your business," Arthur Ferris’s voice barked through the speaker.
"Arthur, have you seen the morning papers?" Julian asked, smoothing his voice into a calm, concerned tone.
"I’m looking at them right now," Arthur snapped. "What the hell happened? You said the Carter girl was neutralized! If Ravenshaw marries her, her father’s old audit files—the ones we buried—could resurface through his legal team. We need that custody case sealed, Julian, and we need that girl discredited before noon."

Julian smiled, a slow, predatory expression that didn't reach his eyes.
"Don't worry, Arthur," Julian murmured, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window. "A woman who spent two years believing she’s losing her mind... is very easy to push over the edge a second time. We just need to remind her why she ran away in the first place."
