Chapter 1 - THE FOUR-MINUTE TRAPThe air inside the west corridor conference room tasted like aged leather, expensive scotch, and the cold, unyielding iron of a trap that had been laid two years in advance.

Amelia’s fingers remained frozen around the stem of the untouched champagne glass. The crystal was ice-cold, yet her palm felt feverish.
"Marry you," she whispered, the words tasting foreign, absurd, and terrifying on her tongue. "You’ve lost your mind."
Gabriel Ravenshaw didn't flinch. He closed the heavy mahogany door behind them, locking out the low, rhythmic thrum of the string quartet and the muffled chatter of New York’s elite. The lock clicked home with a heavy, final sound.
"I am entirely sane, Ms. Carter," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that quiet, gravelly register that commanded entire boardrooms. He walked past her toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan’s glittering skyline. "And right now, you are standing on the edge of a cliff. If Julian Vale publishes those photos—which his publicist is undoubtedly formatting for tomorrow morning’s tabloids—you won't just be the unhinged ex-fiancée anymore. You'll be the unstable opportunist who targeted a multi-billionaire in public."
Amelia’s chest tightened. She set the glass down so hard the stem cracked.
"Let him," she hissed, anger finally piercing through the numb panic. "Let them write whatever they want. I’m already invisible. I’m already a ghost in my own city!"
"And my niece?" Gabriel turned sharply, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, protective intensity that made her step back. "Does Clara get to be a ghost too? Julian’s future father-in-law, Arthur Ferris, is sitting on the family court advisory board. They want complete guardianship of Clara to secure the Ravenshaw-Ferris logistics merger. They need me distracted. They need me embroiled in a public scandal, compromised by a woman deemed psychologically unstable."
Amelia stared at him, the pieces clicking together with sickening clarity. "You think Julian planned this."
"I don't think. I know." Gabriel walked closer, closing the distance between them until she could smell the clean, sharp scent of cedarwood and rain on his jacket. "Julian knew you’d be here. He made sure your invitation wasn't intercepted by my security team. He brought Georgiana Ferris straight to the east terrace knowing you’d panic."
"Why?" Amelia’s voice broke. "Why would he care what I do? He won! He took my father’s company, he took my mother’s home, he took my life!"
"Because," Gabriel said softly, "you never signed the final non-disclosure addendum. As long as you remain legally single and unattached, you are a loose end. But if you marry me—if you step into the light as a Ravenshaw—Arthur Ferris’s political leverage evaporates overnight. No family court judge will touch a custody battle against a united front of Gabriel Ravenshaw and his wife."
Amelia stared at the man standing inches from her. He was a stranger. A myth wrapped in an expensive suit. Yet here he was, offering her a lifeline wrapped in barbed wire.
"And what do I get?" she asked, her voice shaking. "A gilded cage? Another man controlling my life?"
"You get immunity," Gabriel said, leaning down slightly so she had no choice but to meet his gaze. "You get an army of lawyers to reopen your mother’s estate, full access to my corporate security team to keep Julian off your shadow, and by summer... an annulment with a billion-dollar settlement that will make you untouchable."
The silence in the room stretched, heavy and electric.
Outside the glass, a police siren wailed in the distance.
Amelia looked down at her hands. For two years, she had hidden in corners. For two years, she had let Julian write the narrative of her downfall.
She raised her head, her chin tilting up with a sudden, reckless defiance that mirrored the moment she had thrown her arms around his chest.
"If we’re going to do this, Gabriel," she whispered, her eyes flashing with a dangerous light, "we do it my way. No prenuptial silence. We announce it on the front steps of the gala, right in front of the cameras."

Gabriel Ravenshaw looked at her for a long, measuring moment. Then, slowly, the corners of his mouth lifted into a cold, lethal smile.
"Deal."
