Chapter 5 - THE ARREST AND THE ALLIANCE"Mr. Julian Vale?" the lead detective asked, his voice cutting cleanly through the stunned silence of the courtroom. "Step away from the table, please. You have a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate identity theft."

Cameras flashed from the press gallery like a rapid-fire thunderstorm. Julian stood up, his face twisted in a mask of cold fury. He looked at Arthur Ferris, but Arthur was already sliding his chair away from Julian’s, desperate to distance himself from the sinking ship.

"This is a farce," Julian hissed, his voice trembling as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. He glared across the room at Amelia. "You think this makes you safe? You think a billionaire like Ravenshaw gives a damn about you? You’re just another transaction to him!"

"Take him out," Judge Sterling ordered, banging her gavel sharply. "Mr. Vale, if you speak another word in my courtroom, I’ll hold you in contempt."

As the detectives led Julian past the gallery, he stopped right beside Amelia’s chair. He leaned down, his voice dropping into a venomous whisper meant only for her ears.

"He’s lying to you, Amelia," Julian hissed, his eyes wild. "Ask him about Clara. Ask him why he’s really fighting Arthur Ferris. You think he’s your savior? You don't even know what’s locked in his basement."

Before Amelia could process the words, Julian was yanked forward and hauled out through the double doors.

The courtroom erupted into chaotic whispers. Judge Sterling banged her gavel repeatedly until order was restored.

"The emergency injunction regarding Clara Ravenshaw is denied," Judge Sterling announced, slamming her gavel down with finality. "Mr. Ravenshaw retains full custody. Court is adjourned."

Outside on the courthouse steps, the media storm was ten times worse than it had been that morning. Microphones slammed against each other, and reporters shouted over one another like a pack of wolves.

"Mr. Ravenshaw! Is Julian Vale’s arrest connected to your engagement?" "Ms. Carter! Do you have a comment on the fraud charges?"

Gabriel didn't stop. He kept one arm firmly around Amelia’s waist, shielding her from the crushing crowd as they pushed through to the waiting armored SUV. Once the heavy doors slammed shut and the privacy partition slid up, sealing them away from the chaos, Amelia exhaled a breath she felt like she’d been holding for two years.

She turned to Gabriel, her heart pounding against her ribs.

"What did he mean?" Amelia asked, her voice tight with suspicion.

Gabriel didn't look at her immediately. He stared straight ahead through the tinted glass, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line.

"Mean about what?" Gabriel asked quietly.

"About Clara. About what’s locked in your basement."

Gabriel turned his head slowly, meeting her eyes. There was no warmth in his expression now—only a deep, haunted shadow that made the air in the car drop ten degrees.

"Julian is a pathological liar, Amelia," Gabriel said evenly. "He says whatever he needs to in order to survive."

"Then why are you hesitating?" Amelia challenged, her voice rising. "You looked right through me just now. You’re hiding something, Gabriel. And if we’re going to pretend to be husband and wife to fool the world, I refuse to be kept in the dark."

Gabriel stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, he pressed a button on the armrest.

"Drive to the estate," Gabriel told the driver through the intercom. "Not the Manhattan penthouse. The Westchester house."

"Why?" Amelia asked.

"Because," Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a low, chilling whisper, "if you want to know the truth about why I need you... you need to see what's behind the second vault in my basement."
