Chapter 6 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE MANORMidnight at the Ravenshaw estate was silent enough to hear the moonlight hit the floorboards.

Gabriel led Amelia down a narrow, reinforced steel staircase hidden behind the library’s floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The air grew colder with every step, smelling faintly of old paper, ozone, and damp stone.
"My grandfather built this panic room in the 1960s," Gabriel explained, his footsteps echoing softly in the dark tunnel. "During the Cold War, it was designed to withstand a localized blast. When I took over the estate, I converted it into a secure data archive."
He stopped in front of a massive, biometric titanium door set into the stone wall. He pressed his thumb against the scanner and entered a twelve-digit numerical code.
CLANG-HISS.
The heavy steel bolts retracted with a mechanical groan, and the door swung open.
Amelia stepped inside, her eyes widening. The room wasn't full of gold bars or weapons. It was covered wall-to-wall with corkboards, digital monitors, newspaper clippings, legal documents, and dozens of interconnected red strings.
It looked like the war room of a paranoid mastermind.
"What is all this?" Amelia breathed, walking past a monitor displaying live security feeds of the entire Westchester perimeter.
"This," Gabriel said, walking over to a central table covered in photographs of Arthur Ferris, Julian Vale, and a woman Amelia didn't recognize, "is why Julian knew your name before you ever met him."
Amelia froze. She turned around slowly. "What are you talking about?"
Gabriel picked up a framed photograph of a young woman with dark hair and striking green eyes who looked hauntingly like Amelia.
"Her name was Elena Vance," Gabriel said quietly. "Arthur Ferris’s daughter. And Julian Vale’s first fiancée... six years before he met you."
Amelia felt the room tilt. "Fiancée? Julian was engaged before me?"
"He was more than engaged," Gabriel said, his voice cracking slightly with suppressed venom. "Julian systematically dismantled her father’s company just like he tried to do to yours. When Elena discovered the fraud, she suffered a sudden, convenient 'psychiatric collapse'—diagnosed by a corrupt doctor on Arthur Ferris’s payroll."
Gabriel walked over to the wall and pointed to a medical report dated seven years ago.
"She was locked in a private sanitarium for six months," Gabriel continued. "And one night, before she could testify in court, she fell from a third-story window. The police ruled it a suicide."
Amelia covered her mouth with her hand, a wave of absolute horror washing over her. "Oh god... Julian did that?"
"Julian and Arthur Ferris together," Gabriel said, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying intensity. "They use the exact same playbook every single time. They target the daughters of wealthy men, isolate them, gaslight them until they believe they're losing their minds, and then steal their inheritances."
Gabriel turned fully toward Amelia, his expression softening into something raw and desperate.
"When Julian set his sights on you two years ago, I tried to warn you," Gabriel whispered. "I tried to reach out at that hotel dining room, but Julian’s security blocked me before I could hand you the file. I’ve spent two years watching him destroy you from afar, waiting for the right moment to strike back."
Amelia stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle violently slamming together in her mind. The fake engagement. The sudden rescue. The marriage proposal.
It wasn't just a political alliance to save Clara.
It was a war.
"You didn't just happen to be at the gala, did you?" Amelia asked, her voice barely a breath.
Gabriel shook his head slowly. "I knew Julian was bringing Georgiana Ferris to test the waters. I positioned myself right where you would run when you panicked. I gave you a reason to grab my arm because it was the only way to pull you out of his crosshairs legally."
Amelia stepped back, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at the photos on the wall, then back at Gabriel.

"You used me as bait," she whispered.
"I used you as a shield," Gabriel corrected fiercely, stepping closer to her. "And in return, I am handing you the knife to kill the monster who ruined your life. We execute the final phase tomorrow morning."
