Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesThe upper floors of the hospital were a scene of controlled chaos when Valerie and I rushed back upstairs. Federal marshals in heavy tactical gear and local detectives were swarming the corridors, rounding up corrupt hospital administrators who had taken bribes to falsify Kayla’s medical logs and tamper with the oxygen lines.

In the center of the main lobby stood my mother, Beatrice, and my father, Richard.
Beatrice’s designer white silk blouse was smeared with mud from the banquet hall pond where she had watched me drown. Her hair was disheveled, her expensive makeup running down her cheeks in ugly, black streaks as two female officers zip-tied her hands behind her back.
"Elena! Elena, darling! Listen to your mother!" Beatrice shrieked the moment she saw me walk through the automatic doors. She threw herself toward me, her eyes wild with terror. "We family! We blood! You can't let these animals put your mother in a federal penitentiary! Your father’s heart—he'll die in a cell, Elena! Have mercy!"
I stopped two feet away from her. I didn't flinch. I didn't cry. I looked down at the woman who had birthed me, raised me, taught me how to read numbers, and then tried to crush my unborn child's life out over eighteen thousand dollars of pocket change.
"Mercy?" I asked, my voice cutting through the lobby like a scalpel. "You didn't show mercy when you forged Grandma's signature while she was paralyzed from a stroke. You didn't show mercy when you dumped me in that pool to bleed out in front of my sister."
Beth was sitting handcuffed on a nearby bench, sobbing uncontrollably into her manicured hands, her luxury social media influencer persona completely shattered into a million pathetic pieces. Her phone lay smashed on the floor beside her—the live-stream audience of fifty thousand followers now watching police officers pull up her financial asset records on live public feeds.
Richard slumped against a marble pillar, looking ten years older, his grey hair matted with sweat. "How, El? How did you trace the offshore accounts? We used twelve layers of shell corporations in Panama."
"Because you're arrogant, Dad," I replied coldly, pulling a printed ledger sheet from my folder and tossing it onto his lap. "You always used the exact same prime-number algorithmic spacing for your primary security salts across every single false company. It’s the mathematical equivalent of signing your name in neon lights across the dark web."
Valerie walked up beside me, handing me a clean, warm woolen blanket from the emergency supply cart. "The prosecutor’s office has already accepted the full RICO indictment package. Not a single asset remains. Every house, every car, every trust fund, and every fake charitable registry your family owns has been seized under asset forfeiture laws."

"And Arthur Vance?" I asked, watching as federal agents frog-marched my distinguished, arrogant father-in-law out toward a waiting black van, his head bowed in absolute disgrace.
"He's heading to a maximum-security federal holding facility," Valerie answered, smiling faintly. "Along with his son. Your marriage is legally annulled due to fraudulent entrapment and coercion. You are entirely free, Elena."
