Chapter 5 - The Mirrored PulseI didn't care about the seized mansions. I didn't care about the frozen accounts, the ruined social media influencers, or the federal indictments tearing my toxic family tree down to its rotting roots.

My entire world shrank down to the dimensions of a clear plastic box in the neonatal intensive care unit.

The backup power grid hummed with a deep, steady bassline. The overhead monitors glowed a brilliant, vibrant emerald green.

Beep... beep... beep...

Kayla’s heart rate was strong, steady, and loud. The tiny chest rose and fell in a natural, rhythmic dance of life. The oxygen saturation levels had climbed back up to ninety-nine percent.

The head neonatologist stepped away from the incubator, wiping sweat from his forehead with a blue paper towel, a massive smile breaking across his tired face. "She's a fighter, Mrs. Vance—excuse me, Moreau. Her vitals have completely stabilized. She’s going to make it."

I let out a ragged, explosive breath that felt like a lifetime of holding grief finally leaving my chest. Tears spilled over my eyelashes, running hot down my cheeks as I pressed my palms against the clear plastic wall of the incubator.

"Hey, little warrior," I whispered, my voice breaking into a soft, loving sob. "Your mommy’s here. No one will ever hurt you again. We're safe now."

A tiny, perfectly formed hand inside the incubator twitched, a minuscule fist curling open as if searching for something to hold onto. I slipped my index finger through the specialized access port, and instantly, a tiny, impossibly soft hand wrapped its fingers tightly around mine with surprising strength.

Valerie stood quietly in the doorway of the NICU room, holding a cardboard tray with two steaming cups of hospital coffee. She didn't interrupt. She just watched us with a quiet, solemn respect that spoke volumes.

After a long moment, Valerie stepped inside and set one of the cups on the small steel table.

"The media outside is going wild," Valerie said quietly. "Your story is trending number one globally. The federal prosecutors are calling your forensic audit package the masterclass of the decade. Dozens of elderly victims whose homes were stolen by Arthur's syndicate are already coming forward to reclaim their properties."

I looked up from the incubator, gently stroking the back of Kayla’s tiny hand. "Good. Let them have their lives back. I just want mine."
