CHAPTER 6 – The Secret Vault Beneath the Ashford Mansion

Daniel barely slept that night.

If Noah truly remembered...

Everything was over.

Not just his inheritance.

His freedom.

His reputation.

His life.

At dawn, he walked into the underground medical wing beneath the Ashford estate.

Only five people in the world knew it existed.

Steel doors.

Private operating rooms.

Hidden laboratories.

It had never appeared on a single blueprint.

Chief Surgeon Dr. Evelyn Brooks approached quietly.

"Everything is ready."

Daniel looked at the operating room.

"No complications?"

She hesitated.

"There is one issue."

"What?"

"The boy refused to eat."

Daniel shrugged.

"He'll survive."

Dr. Brooks lowered her voice.

"He also asked me one question."

Daniel frowned.

"What question?"

"'Does my mother know I'm here?'"

For the first time in years...

Daniel felt something dangerously close to guilt.

It lasted less than two seconds.

"Prepare the anesthesia."

Across Chicago...

Victoria refused to wait for the police.

"They're too slow."

James nodded.

"I agree."

He unlocked another box recovered from Harold's private vault.

Inside was a collection of cassette tapes.

Each one carried a date.

Victoria inserted the oldest tape.

Static.

Then her father's voice filled the room.

"Experiment One failed."

Victoria frowned.

Another voice answered.

Victor Laurent.

"The child wasn't compatible."

Harold replied calmly.

"We'll acquire another."

Victoria's blood ran cold.

Another tape.

"Subject Noah remains healthy."

Victor laughed.

"He's stronger than expected."

Harold answered:

"Good. Daniel may need him one day."

Victoria ripped the recorder from the wall.

It shattered across the floor.

Emily stood frozen in the doorway.

"Mom..."

Victoria immediately embraced her.

"I'm so sorry."

Emily looked up.

"You're going to bring him home..."

"...aren't you?"

Victoria wiped away her tears.

"No matter who I have to fight."

James interrupted.

"I found the mansion."

Victoria turned sharply.

"What?"

"A thermal drone picked up unusual activity beneath the Ashford estate."

He spread satellite photographs across the table.

"There."

A hidden elevator.

Fresh vehicle tracks.

Medical waste containers.

Private generators.

Victoria stared at the images.

"They built a hospital..."

"...under our home."

James nodded.

"I've already contacted the FBI."

Victoria shook her head.

"They won't arrive in time."

James understood immediately.

"What are you thinking?"

Victoria loaded a pistol into her handbag.

"I'm bringing my son home myself."

Deep beneath the mansion...

Noah quietly loosened one wrist.

Daniel had underestimated him.

Years surviving kidnappers had taught Noah one priceless lesson.

Never let your captors believe you've stopped fighting.

The leather restraint slipped free.

He looked toward the security camera.

Then smiled.

Very slowly...

He raised one hand...

...and gave the camera a small wave.

Miles away, in the security room, one guard frowned.

"Wait..."

Another guard leaned over.

"What?"

The first guard's face turned white.

"He's loose."

At that exact second...

The emergency lights throughout the underground facility suddenly turned red.

A computerized voice echoed through every hallway.

"SECURITY BREACH DETECTED."

Daniel spun toward the monitors.

One camera after another went black.

Then the final screen flickered back on.

Noah stood alone in the operating room.

Holding a scalpel.

Looking directly into the camera.

May you like

And smiling.
