CHAPTER 7 – The Boy They Thought Was Helpless Turned the Hunters Into the Hunted

The underground facility erupted into chaos.
Red emergency lights flashed across polished steel walls.
Alarms screamed through every corridor.
Guards sprinted in every direction.
"Find him!"
"Seal every exit!"
"No one leaves this level!"
Daniel Ashford stood frozen in the security room, staring at the monitor.
The restraints were empty.
The operating table was empty.
Only one thing remained.
The scalpel.
Balanced neatly in the center of the bed.
As if Noah had left it there on purpose.
Daniel slammed his fist against the console.
"Search every room!"
Twenty-four armed guards flooded the underground complex.
Thermal cameras activated.
Steel security doors crashed shut one after another.
There was no way out.
At least...
That's what Daniel believed.
Noah moved silently through the ventilation tunnels.
Years of surviving abandoned buildings and hiding from violent men had taught him something no expensive security system could detect.
How to disappear.
He crawled carefully, ignoring the pain in his bruised wrists.
Every few feet he paused.
Listened.
Waited.
Then moved again.
Below him, guards rushed through the corridors.
"He can't have gone far!"
"Check the laboratories!"
"Search the storage rooms!"
One guard suddenly stopped beneath the vent.
"I heard something."
Noah held his breath.
The guard slowly raised his flashlight.
For several terrifying seconds...
Neither of them moved.
Then another guard shouted from down the hallway.
"We found footprints!"
The first guard cursed and ran away.
Only after the footsteps faded did Noah breathe again.
Meanwhile...
Victoria's black SUV rolled to a stop outside the Ashford estate.
Rain hammered the windshield.
The mansion looked peaceful.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
No one driving past would ever imagine children had suffered beneath its foundation.
James loaded another magazine into his pistol.
"The FBI is still twenty minutes away."
Victoria shook her head.
"Noah doesn't have twenty minutes."
Behind them, three vehicles arrived without headlights.
Former Chicago homicide detective Marcus Hale stepped out.
Beside him came four retired officers.
Each owed Victoria a favor from years earlier when she had secretly funded scholarships for the children of fallen police officers.
Marcus looked at the mansion.
"So..."
"Your family built a prison."
Victoria answered quietly.
"My father did."
Marcus checked his watch.
"We go in now."
Inside the underground facility...
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"What?"
A frightened technician shouted through the speaker.
"Sir..."
"Someone hacked the surveillance system."
Daniel frowned.
"Impossible."
"The cameras..."
"They're replaying old footage."
Daniel spun toward the security monitors.
His blood ran cold.
Every screen showed guards searching empty hallways.
Timestamped...
Five minutes earlier.
Noah wasn't being watched anymore.
He was watching them.
Noah reached the old maintenance room.
Dust covered forgotten electrical panels.
Broken pipes lined the walls.
Then he saw something unexpected.
A faded wooden box.
Inside...
A worn red scarf.
A small stuffed rabbit.
And a photograph.
Maria.
She was smiling while holding six-year-old Noah in her arms.
Written on the back were five words.
"If you survive, tell the truth."
Noah pressed the photo against his chest.
"I will."
Then his eyes noticed something else.
Blueprints.
Original construction plans for the Ashford mansion.
Including...
A forgotten escape tunnel leading to the gardens.
Maria had planned an escape years ago.
She had almost made it.
Above ground...
Victoria and Marcus quietly entered through a service entrance.
The mansion was strangely empty.
Too empty.
No servants.
No security.
No lights.
Marcus whispered,
"It's a trap."
Before Victoria could answer...
A slow clap echoed through the grand entrance hall.
Daniel stepped out from the shadows.
Perfect suit.
Perfect smile.
Perfect composure.
"You always were impatient, Victoria."
She raised her pistol.
"Where is my son?"
Daniel smiled.
"Safe."
"You lied once."
"You'll lie again."
Daniel sighed.
"You still don't understand."
"He isn't your son anymore."
Victoria's finger tightened on the trigger.
"He has always been my son."
Daniel laughed.
"You've known him for less than forty-eight hours."
"I've owned him for twenty-three years."
Marcus immediately drew his weapon.
"Don't move."
Daniel calmly lifted both hands.
"You really think I'm the villain?"
Victoria stared.
"What?"
Daniel pressed a button hidden inside his watch.
Every light inside the mansion shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then giant television screens descended from the ceiling.
Security footage began playing automatically.
Not of Noah.
Of Harold Ashford.
Victoria's late father.
The recordings had been made secretly.
Harold sat across from Victor Laurent.
His voice echoed through the silent hall.
"If anything happens to Daniel..."
"...the boy dies."
Victor answered coldly.
"And if something happens to me?"
Harold smiled.
"Then my daughter will eventually find him."
Victoria froze.
Daniel slowly lowered his hands.
"I didn't create this nightmare."
"Our father did."
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
Daniel continued quietly.
"He controlled both of us."
"You were his experiment."
"I was his replacement."
Before anyone could speak again...
A child's voice echoed through the mansion speakers.
Clear.
Calm.
Certain.
"Mom..."
Victoria's heart stopped.
"Noah?"
"I found Grandpa's secret room."
The speakers crackled.
"And..."
A pause.
"...I found something much worse."
At that exact moment...
Every television screen in the mansion changed.
Instead of security footage...
A live video appeared.
Noah stood inside a hidden underground vault.
Behind him...
Rows of filing cabinets stretched into the darkness.
Thousands of folders.
Thousands of names.
Thousands of children.
Noah slowly held up the first file.
Across the front, stamped in red ink, were two horrifying words:
PROJECT HEIRS
Victoria felt the blood drain from her face.
Her father hadn't stolen one child.
He had built an entire empire...
May you like
On stolen children.
