“Mr. Cameron! Can we roast marshmallows tonight? The fire pit is ready!”
“Only if your mom says it’s okay,” Cameron smiled, winking at Clara.
Clara looked down at her daughter, then up at Cameron. The ghosts of their past struggles—the cold airport floor, the grueling night shifts, the terrifying uncertainty of poverty—seemed miles away, dissolved by the simple, enduring warmth of a family that had formed in the unlikeliest of places.
“Marshmallows are officially approved,” Clara whispered.
That evening, as the crackle of wood fire filled the quiet neighborhood and fireflies flickered across the lawn, Cameron sat on the back patio steps with Hope on one side and Clara resting her head gently on his shoulder.
