Chapter 7 - Blood and BloodlinesThe air in the penthouse grew thick with menace. Julian Vance stepped out of the shadows, the matte-black finish of his silenced pistol catching the cool blue light of the city skyline.

“Put the letter down, Elena,” Julian instructed softly, his voice carrying an eerie, hypnotic calm. “Or I save your father the trouble of raising a grandchild by cutting this little tragedy short right here.”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but beneath the terror, a cold, familiar rage began to flare. They thought my gentleness was stupidity. They thought because I was pregnant, I was helpless.

“You’re late, Julian,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady as I kept one hand protectively over my twenty-eight-week belly. “Director Vance and the federal marshals cleared this building three hours ago. You’re trapped.”

Julian chuckled—a low, dark sound that echoed off the high ceilings. “Feds? Sweetheart, my brother was a disposable asset. A useful idiot sent to bleed your family’s accounts dry. But me? I’m the cleanup crew. And federal marshals don’t check the sub-basement ventilation shafts.”

He took another step forward, raising the pistol slightly to align with my chest. “Now, hand over the flash drive. Or do I have to cut it out of your coat pocket myself?”

Before I could move, the heavy mahogany double doors behind Julian splintered inward with an explosive boom.

Director Vance and two tactical operatives poured into the penthouse, flashbang grenades rolling across the polished marble floor.

FLASH! BANG!

A blinding white light and a concussive roar detonated the room. Julian cursed, stumbling backward as the flashbang disoriented him, firing his weapon blindly toward the windows. Glass shattered in a massive cascade, raining down fifty stories into the street below.

Director Vance didn’t hesitate. He vaulted over the low sofa, tackling Julian squarely in the chest and driving him hard into the floor. The silenced pistol clattered across the marble, sliding away into the darkness.

“Secure him!” Vance commanded, pressing his knee sharply into Julian’s spine and snapping heavy zip-ties around his wrists.

Dad burst through the shattered entryway a second later, his face pale with panic. He rushed across the room, grabbing my shoulders and pulling me into a fierce, protective embrace.

“Are you hurt? Did he touch you?” Dad checked frantically, his hands trembling as he inspected my face and arms.

“I’m fine, Dad. I’m okay,” I whispered, burying my face against his shoulder for a brief moment before pulling back and holding up the slim black flash drive. “Mom knew. She left this in her jewelry box. It proves Richard and Julian weren’t just corporate thieves—they’re part of an international syndicate trying to seize our entire portfolio.”

Dad looked down at the drive, his eyes turning from warm relief into absolute, terrifying fury. He turned toward Julian, who was being hauled to his feet by two operatives, a bloody lip splitting his arrogant smirk.

“Take him to the black-site facility,” Dad ordered, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold it felt sub-zero. “No trial. No holding cell. Invoke National Security Directive 4.”

Julian laughed, blood dripping onto his chin. “You can’t bury us all, Arthur! The board is already infected! Your precious company belongs to us by sunrise!”
