Chapter 9 - The Final StandThe heavy steel reinforced door of the briefing room shuddered under the heavy impact of a tactical battering ram.

THUD! THUD! THUD!
Inside the room, the emergency strobe lights painted everything in flashing crimson. Director Vance drew his sidearm, taking a defensive position beside the reinforced glass, while Dad stood directly in front of me, shielding my twenty-eight-week belly with his own body.
“Dad, move,” I whispered urgently, reaching into my coat and pulling out the small, encrypted terminal Dad had given me on the estate driveway days ago. “They want the terminal and the flash drive. They don't care about anything else.”
“I will never let them touch you,” Dad said, his voice hard as iron. He pulled his own service pistol—a heavy, modified Sig Sauer he hadn’t carried since his active intelligence days—and checked the magazine with a sharp clack.
Outside in the hallway, Victoria’s mocking laughter echoed over the intercom speakers.
“Open the door, Arthur! You’re outgunned, outmaneuvered, and completely cornered! Hand over the girl, the drive, and the company codes, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you die of old age in a federal cell!”
Director Vance tapped a hidden sequence onto the master console. A small holographic panel blinked green.
“Sir,” Vance said quietly, not taking his eyes off the reinforced door. “The automated defense grid in Sub-Level 4 is offline, but I can trigger the facility’s gas containment protocol. It will incapacitate everyone in the corridor within thirty seconds—including us, if we don't put on our masks.”
“Do it,” Dad ordered instantly.
Vance slammed his hand onto the red override button. A hissing sound filled the ventilation shafts overhead, followed by a dense, colorless vapor that poured from the ceiling grills into the outer hallway.
Through the two-way mirror, we watched Victoria’s mercenaries suddenly stumble. One by one, their weapons clattered to the floor as they dropped to their knees, gasping for air before collapsing unconscious onto the concrete.
Victoria herself staggered, coughing violently, her pristine white Chanel suit stained with soot and sweat. She raised her submachine gun, aiming blindly toward the glass, screaming obscenities into the void.
“I’ll kill you all! I’ll burn this entire empire to the ash—!”
She didn't finish the sentence. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed gracefully across the unconscious body of her lead mercenary, her manicured fingers twitching once before falling entirely still.
Silence descended upon the subterranean corridor, broken only by the hum of the air filters clearing the gas.
Dad lowered his pistol, letting out a long, shuddering breath, and turned to look at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

“It’s over,” Dad whispered, pulling me into his arms. “The syndicate is broken. The board is ours. You and your baby are safe.”
I rested my head against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart and the gentle kick of my baby, knowing the nightmare was finally, truly at an end.
