Chapter 2 - THE DEAD DON'T STAY SILENT

Vanessa looked as though she had been struck by lightning. Her lips moved, but no sound came out. The remaining guests scrambled toward the exit, terrified of being dragged into a high-profile criminal nightmare. Security let them flee—we didn't need the bottom-feeders. We only needed Vanessa.
"Victor..." I whispered, turning to the attorney. "What do you mean? Claire died of sudden cardiac arrest. The hospital confirmed it."
"The hospital confirmed what they were paid to confirm, Nathan," Victor said, gesturing to one of his guards. The guard opened a briefcase and handed a tablet to me. "For the last six months, while you were building Caldwell Systems abroad, I wasn't off grid. I was running a private forensic investigation into your late wife’s death."
I looked down at the tablet screen. Toxicology reports, CCTV footage from the hospital hallway, and digital access logs from three years ago filled the display.
"Three years ago, Claire was admitted for minor exhaustion," Victor explained, his voice echoing off the ballroom walls. "The night she died, the CCTV footage was mysteriously wiped. But my team managed to recover the scrambled data from the local server. Look at the timestamp at 2:14 AM."
I zoomed in on the image. It showed a woman dressed in a nurse’s scrub suit stepping out of Claire’s room. Her mask was pulled down slightly, revealing her face.
It was Vanessa.
At that time, three years ago, Vanessa was just Claire’s ambitious executive assistant.
"She swapped Claire’s IV drip with potassium chloride," Victor stated, his voice heavy with grim certainty. "It leaves almost no trace during a standard autopsy and mimics a massive heart attack. Vanessa killed your wife, Nathan. And six months later, she seduced you while you were drowning in grief, positioning herself to take everything Claire built."
Vanessa backed against the far wall, her hands clawing at the wallpaper. "Lies! Fabricated evidence! You forged those documents! Nathan, don't listen to him! He’s trying to destroy our family!"
"Family?" I roared, throwing the tablet onto the marble table where it shattered against a broken champagne glass. "You kept my daughters in a sub-zero room eating moldy bread! You drugged them! And now I find out you murdered their mother?!"
"You have no proof!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice turning high-pitched and hysterical. "No court will accept a recovered server file from three years ago! My lawyers will tear you apart!"
"They won't get the chance," I said softly.
I walked toward her, each step echoing like a death knell. Vanessa tried to dodge past me toward the hallway, but I grabbed her wrist, twisting it just enough to force her to drop the diamond necklace she had been clutching.
"You think my money made you untouchable, Vanessa," I whispered into her ear as she squirmed. "You forgot who built this empire. I didn't just build software for corporations. I built surveillance systems for the government."
I pulled out my phone and tapped a red icon.
"Every room in this house—including your private study, your bedroom, and the dark room where you kept my daughters—has been recording audio and video directly to a secure military-grade server since the moment I stepped onto this property tonight," I said. "Your confession about starving them? Recorded. Your admission of taking my money? Recorded. And five minutes ago, your reaction to Victor’s evidence? Transmitted directly to the District Attorney's office."
Outside, the faint sound of sirens began to wail in the distance, echoing across the snowy peaks of Aspen.
Vanessa’s knees buckled. She dropped to the cold floor, sobbing hysterically, covered in spilled caviar and ruined silk.
"Take her down to the gate," I ordered Victor’s security guards. "Don't let her near my children."
As the guards dragged Vanessa screaming out of the room, I turned toward the stairs leading up to the west wing. My heart felt heavy as lead, but the nightmare was far from over.

Because as I took the first step up the stairs, my phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted message from an unknown number:
"You think Vanessa was acting alone? Check the floorboards beneath your daughters' bed before the police arrive. - A Friend."
