Chapter 6 - THE MIRACLE AT DAWN

By 5:00 AM, the blizzard outside had finally subsided, leaving behind a pristine blanket of soft white snow illuminated by the soft pink light of dawn.
The flashing red and blue lights of police cars and ambulances reflected off the high glass windows of my Aspen mansion. Federal agents were packing up crates of evidence from Vanessa’s study, while tow trucks hauled away the luxury sports cars that had belonged to the fake friends who had partied in my home while my daughters starved.
Downstairs in the main living room, the massive stone fireplace was roaring with a bright, crackling fire.
My four little girls—Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace—were wrapped in thick, plush wool blankets on the oversized leather sofa. They were eating warm oatmeal and drinking hot chocolate provided by the emergency medical team, their tiny cheeks slowly regaining their natural, rosy color.
I sat on the floor in front of them, holding a wet cloth to the scratch on my cheek.
Emma reached out her tiny hand, her gray eyes filled with a wisdom far beyond her five years, and gently touched my face.
"Does it hurt, Daddy?" she whispered softly.
I grabbed her tiny hand and kissed her palm. "Not anymore, baby. Not anymore."
Lily slid off the couch and wrapped her arms around my neck. "Are we going to have to eat the green bread again?"
My chest tightened with an intense ache, but I pulled all four of them into my arms, holding them as tightly as I could without hurting them.
"Never again," I promised, my voice thick with tears. "You can have whatever you want, whenever you want. You are going to grow up strong, happy, and safe. I am never, ever leaving you again."
Victor walked into the living room, holding a steaming cup of coffee. He placed a gentle hand on my shoulder.
"The federal prosecutor just called," Victor said quietly so the girls wouldn't hear. "Vanessa and Arthur are being held without bail on charges of attempted murder, child endangerment, conspiracy, and grand larceny. With the evidence Claire left behind, they will both spend the rest of their natural lives in a federal penitentiary."
I looked up at Victor and nodded. "And Apex?"
"Their stocks collapsed twenty minutes ago when the European markets opened," Victor smiled faintly. "Interpol is currently executing arrest warrants in seven countries. Claire’s legacy didn't just save your daughters, Nathan... she brought down an entire empire."
I looked back at my four girls, who were now giggling softly as Sophie accidentally got a mustache of whipped cream from her hot chocolate.
For the first time in three long, painful years, the heavy weight that had rested on my chest was finally gone.
The mansion wasn't cold anymore. The shadows were gone.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out four small, gold-wrapped Christmas presents that I had managed to keep safe throughout the night. I placed them in front of my daughters.
"Merry Christmas, my sweet angels," I whispered.
Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace looked at the presents, then looked up at me, their faces lighting up with pure, unadulterated joy.
They didn't tear into the paper right away. Instead, all four of them leaned forward and wrapped their small, warm arms around me.

"Merry Christmas, Daddy," they whispered in unison.
Outside the window, the sun rose over the snow-capped mountains of Aspen, burning away the winter dark, announcing a brand new day—and a brand new life.
