Chapter 5 - BLOOD ON THE SNOW

The knife flashed in the dim light. I ducked, feeling the cold steel scrape across my cheek, drawing blood.

Arthur was larger and trained, but I was driven by something far more dangerous: a father’s primal need to protect his children.

I grabbed Arthur by his lapels and rammed him violently backward into the wall. The old drywall cracked under the impact. He slashed blindly with the knife, catching my forearm, but I ignored the tearing pain, driving my knee directly into his ribs with a sickening crunch.

Arthur gasped for air, dropping the knife. I grabbed him by the throat, shoving him down onto the mattress where my daughters had been shivering moments ago.

"You took their mother," I breathed, my voice dropping to a terrifying growl as my hands tightened around his neck. "You let them freeze. You tried to poison them."

Arthur’s face turned purple, his fingers frantically clawing at my wrists. "Nathan... wait... Apex... they'll kill... everyone..." he gasped out.

"Let them try," I said.

Before I could finish it, the bedroom door burst open.

"Nathan, stop!" Victor shouted, running into the room, flanked by two armed federal agents wearing tactical vests stamped with FBI.

"Nathan, let him go!" Victor yelled, grabbing my shoulders and pulling me back. "He’s no good to us dead! The FBI has the whole house surrounded!"

I slowly released my grip. Arthur collapsed onto the mattress, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat.

The federal agents pinned Arthur to the floor, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Nathan Caldwell," one of the lead agents said, stepping forward and displaying a badge. "I’m Special Agent Miller, Cyber Crimes Division. We received a secure data transmission from your private server twenty minutes ago containing live stream video, financial ledgers, and decrypted Apex files."

I stood up, wiping the blood from my cheek with the sleeve of my torn shirt. "Claire left the decryption keys in the safe."

Agent Miller looked at the open floorboards and nodded with deep respect. "Your late wife worked with us in secret for six months before her death, Mr. Caldwell. She was an informant for the Department of Justice. She knew she was in danger, so she built a digital trap. She knew that eventually, Vanessa and Arthur would push too far, and you would come home."

"Where are my daughters?" I asked, my voice cracking with exhaustion.

"They are downstairs with our medical team," Miller assured me softly. "They are warm, they are being examined, and they are completely safe. Vanessa Vance is already in federal custody in the back of a transport unit."

I took a deep breath, looking down at Arthur, who was being dragged to his feet by two agents. His eyes were full of unadulterated hatred.

"This isn't over, Nathan!" Arthur spat, blood trickling from his mouth onto his pristine white shirt. "Apex is bigger than you! Bigger than the FBI! You won't survive the night!"

"You're wrong, Arthur," I said, stepping right up to his face. "It is over. Because I didn't just upload the files to the FBI."

Arthur froze. "What?"

"I built Caldwell Systems," I smiled, a dark, victorious smile. "Ten minutes ago, when I unlocked that safe, an automated script released every piece of evidence, every corporate record, and every name involved in Apex to every major media outlet, international intelligence agency, and stock exchange in the world."

Arthur’s eyes dilated in pure horror.

"You didn't just lose, Arthur," I whispered. "You vanished."
