Chapter 10 - The New Empire and the Unexpected Twist

The smoke cleared over the Chicago skyline as the winter sun began to break through the gray clouds on Christmas morning, 2023.
The Moretti estate was quiet once more, save for the sirens of ambulances hauling away the surviving mercenaries and a disgraced senator in handcuffs. Isabella Thorne, broken and stripped of her family name, was already on a transport van bound for a maximum-security federal penitentiary, her grand plans reduced to ash.
Inside the private kitchen of the mansion, the smell of fresh coffee and warm cinnamon rolls filled the air.
Leo and Mia were sitting at the large marble island, laughing as they decorated Christmas cookies with colorful sprinkles.
Elra Vance stood by the window, watching the snow fall over the pristine courtyard. Her mother was recovering successfully, her medical bills fully paid, her future secure. Elra herself was no longer wearing a maid’s uniform. She wore a tailored cashmere sweater—a gift from Lorenzo, though he would never admit to buying it personally.
Footsteps approached behind her.
"They're finally smiling again," Lorenzo said quietly, stopping beside her at the window. He held two steaming mugs of coffee, offering one to her.
Elra took the mug, their fingers brushing slightly. "They needed to feel safe again. That's all."
Lorenzo looked down at her, his hard exterior softening just a fraction—a look no one else in Chicago had ever lived long enough to see.
"You saved them, Elra," he said, his voice low and intense. "You saved my entire legacy. In my world, we don't have maids. And we certainly don't have employees who walk away after saving the boss's life."
Elra turned to face him, raising an eyebrow with a faint, confident smile that had been buried under years of struggle. "Is that a threat, Mr. Moretti?"
Lorenzo smiled—a real, genuine smile that transformed his dangerous face entirely.
"It’s an offer," he said, holding out his hand. "Partner. Co-director of the Moretti Foundation... and guardian of my family. Forever."

Elra looked at his outstretched hand, then up into his dark, unwavering eyes. The invisible girl from the catering van was gone. In her place stood a queen of the North Side.
She slipped her hand into his, gripping it firmly. "Deal."
