Chapter 4 - The Intrusion

The music in the ballroom was swelling into a grand waltz as Lorenzo and Isabella took the floor. The crowd parted, clapping politely, watching the power couple glide across the polished marble.

Isabella rested her head against Lorenzo’s chest, closing her eyes in triumph. The night was almost over. In a few hours, the guests would leave, the staff would clear out, and she would casually mention to Lorenzo that the children must have wandered off into the basement and locked themselves in the industrial freezer by accident. Tragic. Unfortunate. But children were so clumsy, weren't they?

Suddenly, the music stuttered.

A collective murmur rippled through the front rows of the crowd. Heads turned toward the grand entrance.

The heavy oak doors didn't just open—they pushed wide with a sharp, echoing slam.

There stood Elra Vance. Her hair had come loose from its severe bun, falling in dark waves around her pale face. In her arms, she carried a shivering, blanket-wrapped little girl, while a pale, traumatized six-year-old boy clung desperately to her skirt.

The ballroom fell dead silent. Even the string quartet stopped playing mid-note.

Lorenzo Moretti froze in the center of the dance floor. His eyes, dark and dead as obsidian, shifted from Isabella to the figures standing in the doorway. The temperature in the room dropped thirty degrees in a fraction of a second.

"What is the meaning of this?" Senator Vance, Isabella's father, barked, stepping forward with a red face. "Get this common help out of here! Security!"

Two armed guards in black suits immediately detached themselves from the walls, marching toward Elra with their hands resting ominously inside their jackets.

"Stop," Lorenzo said.

It wasn't a shout. It was a single, low command that froze the guards in their tracks instantly.

Lorenzo released Isabella’s hand. He didn't look at her. He walked past her, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor as he approached the entrance. Every eye in the room was glued to him.

He stopped a few feet from Elra and the children. He knelt down slowly until he was eye-level with Leo.

"Leo," Lorenzo said, his voice stripped of all its usual cold authority, carrying an edge of terrifying fragility. "What happened to you?"

Leo looked up at his uncle, his lower lip trembling. "She... she put us in the box, Uncle Enzo. The dark box with the meat. She said we were unwanted."

Lorenzo stood up.

The silence in the room was absolute. You could hear the distant hum of the ventilation system. Lorenzo turned his head very, very slowly, until his dark eyes locked onto Isabella Thorne.
