Chapter 3: The Woman at the Head Table

All eyes turned toward the head table.
Sitting there in a silver gown, with diamonds around her neck, was Richard Sterling’s younger sister—
Evelyn Sterling.
She was the woman everyone trusted.
The woman who had managed Richard’s estate after the accident.
The woman who had cried at the empty funeral for his “dead” newborn son.
Evelyn slowly stood up, her face pale but proud.
“This is ridiculous,” she said coldly. “That child is a liar.”
The barefoot boy hid behind Richard’s arm.
But Richard did not move.
For the first time in nine years, he looked at his sister like she was a stranger.
The detective stepped forward and opened a folder.
“We found hospital records that were deleted the night of the storm,” she said. “A nurse was paid to take the baby away. The payment came from a private Sterling family account.”
The ballroom gasped.
Evelyn’s lips trembled.
Richard whispered, “Tell me it wasn’t you.”
Evelyn’s eyes suddenly filled with rage.
“You were going to leave everything to that baby!” she snapped. “The company, the estate, the trust—everything! I built this family name while you mourned your precious wife!”
Richard stepped back as if she had stabbed him.
The boy looked up with tears in his eyes.
“So… she threw me away?”
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“No. I made sure you disappeared.”
The room went dead silent.
Then Richard pulled the boy into his arms.
For nine years, he had buried an empty coffin.
For nine years, he had blamed God.
But the real monster had been sitting at his own table, smiling beside him.
As the police placed handcuffs on Evelyn’s wrists, she screamed one final warning:
“You think this ends tonight? Ask him what happened to your mother!”
Richard froze.
The boy slowly looked up.
“My mother… is alive?”
May you like
And for the first time all night…
Richard had no answer.
