Chapter 6: The Child They Were Really Hunting

Richard stared at the silent phone in disbelief.

The call had ended.

But one sentence kept echoing in his mind.

"Bring the boy... because he's the real reason this all began."

The detectives immediately traced the number.

Nothing.

It had been routed through six different countries before disappearing.

"This wasn't a random kidnapping," the lead detective said. "Whoever is behind this has been planning it for years."

The barefoot boy tugged gently on Richard's sleeve.

"Dad..."

"I think I know where Mom is."

Everyone turned toward him.

Richard knelt.

"What do you mean?"

The boy reached into the lining of his old backpack and pulled out something no one had ever seen before.

A tiny brass key.

"I wasn't supposed to show anyone this unless we were in danger."

He flipped the key over.

Engraved on one side were the words:

PROPERTY 17

On the other side...

A strange symbol that matched the tattoo found on the kidnapper's wrist.

The detective's face instantly lost all color.

"I've seen that symbol before."

"It's connected to an abandoned Sterling Global research facility outside the city."

Richard frowned.

"Research facility? We shut that place down years ago."

"No," the detective replied quietly.

"You shut it down on paper."

"They never actually left."

Within twenty minutes, dozens of police vehicles surrounded the abandoned compound.

The rusted gates creaked open.

Everything looked deserted.

Until...

The little boy suddenly pointed toward one warehouse.

"There."

"Mom told me never to forget that red door."

SWAT officers breached the entrance.

The warehouse was empty.

Old machines.

Broken computers.

Dust everywhere.

Then...

A hidden elevator began descending beneath the concrete floor.

Richard's heart pounded.

Someone was still inside.

The doors opened.

A massive underground laboratory stretched beneath the building.

Rows of computer servers blinked in the darkness.

Dozens of security monitors displayed live camera feeds from across the property.

One screen froze Richard in place.

Sophia.

Alive.

Locked inside a reinforced glass room.

She looked exhausted...

But unharmed.

"Mom!" the little boy cried.

At that exact moment, every monitor in the room flickered.

A man's face appeared on every screen.

He smiled calmly.

"Welcome back, Richard."

"You've spent nine years searching for your family."

"But you never once asked the most important question."

Richard stepped closer.

"Who are you?"

The man chuckled.

"I'm not your enemy."

"I'm the man who saved your son."

Silence filled the underground bunker.

Then the stranger removed his glasses.

Richard gasped.

The man had the exact same eyes...

The same voice...

The same face.

It was like looking into an older version of himself.

The stranger smiled.

"No, Richard..."

"You don't have one child."

May you like

"You have twins."
