Chapter 1 - THE PHANTOM PILLThe bathroom floor was cold against my bare feet as I stared at the tiny, harmless placebo tablet resting in the palm of my hand.

In the master bedroom just a few feet away, Daniel was humming softly as he straightened his tie in front of the mirror, getting ready for another one of his "late-night meetings" with Vanessa.

An hour earlier, standing over the false bottom of his mahogany desk, I had stared in mounting horror at the two distinct pill bottles. One contained the heavy, life-saving cardiac medication prescribed by Dr. Harris. The other—the one Daniel diligently handed me every single morning and night—contained sugar-filled starch placebos designed to let my autoimmune condition slowly, naturally deteriorate my heart until I suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.

To any coroner, my death would look completely organic. A tragic, expected complication of a failing heart.

No autopsy. No foul play. Just a twelve-million-dollar payout and a grieving widower ready to start a new life with his mistress.

Daniel walked into the bathroom, leaning against the doorframe with a look of manufactured, tender concern.

"Did you take your medicine, sweetheart?" he asked, his voice dripping with syrupy affection.

I looked up at him, swallowed the harmless sugar pill dry, and offered him a weak, trembling smile.

"All gone, Daniel," I whispered. "Thank you for taking such good care of me."

He smiled, kissing my forehead. "Anything for you, Claire. We're in this together."

As soon as he left for work, I locked the bathroom door, pulled my encrypted laptop from my travel bag, and began pulling records.
