Chapter 4 - The Photograph in the Locked DrawerAlexander turned his back on Maria and walked slowly toward his oversized walnut desk. He punched a security code into a hidden biometric panel beneath the surface. A secret compartment clicked open, revealing a velvet-lined box that no living soul had seen since the day his sister died.

He reached inside and pulled out an old, slightly faded Polaroid photograph.
It was a picture of Emily—his beloved, late sister—laughing wildly on a beach, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a yellow blanket with a blue ribbon. The exact same ribbon Mia was wearing in her hair.
Alexander turned around slowly, holding the photograph out toward Maria. The air in the room seemed to vanish.
"Emily died three years ago in a car crash," Alexander whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in a decade. "The hospital report said she was alone. They said the baby didn't survive the impact."
Maria looked at the photograph, then closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The secret she had guarded with her life for a decade was finally breaking open.
"The hospital lied, Mr. Reed," Maria said softly. "Or rather... someone paid them to lie."
Mia stepped out from behind Maria, walking up to Alexander. She reached out and gently touched the edge of the photograph in his hand.

"Mommy told me my auntie was a princess who looked at the stars," Mia whispered, looking up into Alexander's stunned eyes. "And she told me my uncle was a giant who forgot how to smile."
Alexander dropped to his knees, coming face to face with his niece. The billionaire tycoon, the man who owned cities, broke down completely as the truth washed over him like a tidal wave.
