CHAPTER 2 — The Man With the Key... and the Secret Only a Three-Year-Old Knew

Marcus didn't breathe.

He couldn't.

The front door opened as quietly as someone entering a place that already belonged to him.

The man never knocked.

Never hesitated.

He simply stepped inside the mansion, closed the door behind him, and slipped a key back into his jacket pocket.

Marcus's pulse pounded in his ears.

There were only five people who had keys to the estate.

Marcus.

Rosa.

The security chief.

The property manager.

And Vanessa.

So why did a complete stranger have one?

Downstairs, Vanessa's entire face transformed.

The irritation she had shown Lily disappeared instantly.

Her shoulders relaxed.

Her eyes sparkled.

She walked toward the man with the kind of smile Marcus hadn't seen in weeks.

"You made good time," she whispered.

The man grinned.

"I knew he'd be asleep."

Marcus clenched the railing.

His headache had been fake.

But suddenly, a real ache spread through his chest.

Lily was still standing there with her little pink cup.

She looked from Vanessa to the stranger, completely unaware that the room had become dangerous.

The man finally noticed the child.

His smile faded.

"Who's this?"

Vanessa sighed.

"The maid's daughter."

"Oh."

He barely looked at Lily again.

As if she were a piece of furniture.

Lily smiled politely anyway.

"My name is Lily."

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he kissed Vanessa on the cheek.

Marcus felt every muscle in his body tighten.

It wasn't the kiss.

It was how natural it looked.

Like it had happened many times before.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Relax. He's upstairs."

"You sure?"

"He took medicine. He'll sleep all night."

The stranger nodded.

"Good."

Then he placed the leather briefcase on the coffee table.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

What was inside?

Money?

Documents?

Jewelry?

Vanessa unlocked the brass clasps.

The lid opened.

Neither of them noticed Marcus watching from the shadows above.

Inside were blueprints.

Property surveys.

Purchase contracts.

Dozens of folders with Marcus Webb Development printed across the covers.

Marcus's stomach dropped.

Those weren't copies.

They were originals.

Highly confidential documents that should have been locked inside his office safe.

The stranger flipped through several pages.

"Perfect."

He smiled.

"Once the wedding happens, everything becomes much easier."

Vanessa poured herself a glass of wine.

"I told you."

"He trusts me completely."

Marcus's fingers dug into the wooden railing until they hurt.

The wedding.

His company.

His documents.

It wasn't just an affair.

Something much larger was happening.

The man unfolded a county zoning map.

"This highway expansion will triple the land value."

Vanessa nodded.

"And Marcus still thinks we're buying the neighboring ranch because I love horses."

Both of them laughed.

Marcus didn't.

Because he remembered exactly how excited Vanessa had been.

"You'll finally have room for horses."

Those had been her words.

He had believed every one of them.

The stranger tapped another folder.

"When we control both parcels, your signature after the wedding gives us majority ownership."

Vanessa smiled.

"And Marcus never reads anything I ask him to sign."

Marcus closed his eyes.

That wasn't true.

He read everything.

Except...

One thing.

Three weeks earlier Vanessa had asked him to sign several wedding planning documents while he was taking calls between meetings.

He had trusted her.

For the first time in years...

He had signed without reading.

His heartbeat became painfully slow.

Had he already handed them something valuable?

Downstairs, Lily quietly climbed onto the sofa.

Nobody paid attention to her.

She hugged Bun and watched cartoons without understanding a single word the adults were saying.

The stranger lowered his voice.

"What about the child?"

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"What about her?"

"Kids repeat things."

Vanessa shrugged.

"She's three."

"Nobody listens to three-year-olds."

Marcus felt a chill run through him.

Children noticed everything.

Adults simply assumed they didn't.

The stranger looked toward Lily.

"We should be careful."

Vanessa laughed.

"The only thing she ever talks about is rabbits and dinosaurs."

Lily suddenly looked up.

"My bunny doesn't like lies."

The room froze.

Vanessa forced a smile.

"What did you say, sweetheart?"

Lily hugged Bun tighter.

"Bun says lying makes people sick."

The stranger chuckled.

"See?"

"She's just being a kid."

But Marcus saw something different.

For the first time since entering the house...

The stranger looked uncomfortable.

Almost nervous.

As if he didn't like being watched by innocent eyes.

Vanessa stood.

"I'll take her back to the kitchen."

She reached for Lily's hand.

The little girl stepped backward.

"I can walk."

Vanessa's smile became thinner.

"You don't want to make Miss Vanessa upset."

Before Lily could answer...

The back door opened.

"Miss Lily?"

Rosa's voice echoed through the hallway.

"I'm here."

Lily's face lit up.

"Mommy!"

She ran across the room into Rosa's arms.

Rosa immediately sensed something was wrong.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at the unfamiliar man.

"I'm sorry," Rosa said quietly.

"I didn't know we had company."

Vanessa answered before anyone else could.

"You weren't supposed to come back this early."

Rosa frowned.

"My shift ended an hour ago."

"I forgot Lily's medicine."

Marcus watched every expression.

For one brief second...

Vanessa looked irritated.

Not because Rosa had interrupted.

Because she had returned unexpectedly.

The stranger quickly closed the briefcase.

Too quickly.

Rosa noticed.

She noticed everything.

Years of surviving an abusive marriage had taught her to read danger before it spoke.

She hugged Lily tighter.

"We'll go."

As Rosa turned toward the kitchen...

Lily looked over her mother's shoulder.

Straight at the leather briefcase.

Then she said something so quietly that only Marcus could hear from above.

"Mommy..."

"...that's the same box Miss Vanessa hid in Mr. Marcus's office."

Marcus's heart stopped.

Not because Lily was accusing anyone.

Because children almost never invent details like that.

She wasn't guessing.

She was remembering.

And in that single innocent sentence...

A three-year-old had unknowingly revealed that someone had already been inside Marcus Webb's private office.

Someone who had no business being there.

Marcus slowly reached into his pocket...

Pulled out his phone...

And instead of calling the police...

He pressed one name.

The only man outside the family he trusted completely.

His head of security.

When the call connected, Marcus whispered just six words.

"Lock every gate. No one leaves."

Downstairs...

Vanessa's phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen.

Then all the color drained from her face.

Because every electronic lock in the estate had just activated.

And the front door...

May you like

Had automatically sealed shut.
